I'm considering a trip to the DVC at Hilton Head this year. Is there no restaurant on the property? I've read a few threads where people complain about the lack of food facilities. Its just my husband and myself, and we aren't into cooking in the room.

No, there is no restaurant on the property per se. There is a "lunch bar". However, within walking distance in Shelter Cove - across the marina - are several very good restaurants. In addition, HHIsland is home to an abundance of excellent restaurants. I don't think you said if you'd have a car, but, if you do, you'll have no trouble finding excellent places to eat.

There are many fine restaurants on Hilton Head Island including one right across the bridge from the DVC(easy walking distance). I think your biggest problem will be with breakfast. There used to be a Cracker Barrel in a shopping center a little way down the road, but I think that is about the closest.

Not only are there multiple places to eat within walking distance, the number of unique places that deliver is extraordinary. Obtaining a meal at HHI is not any type of problem for any taste or budget. They usually give you a book with local menus and details about location, price, and who delivers. Makes vacationing easier!!

We just returned from another great trip to Hilton Head. Our attitude about the food is-"So many great resturaunts, so little time." Also, there's Piggly Wiggly nearby, which offers a make your own salad bar and lots of individual meal offerings, so you can get a home cooked (sort of) meal and take it back to your villa to eat. Dare I admit this? DH had one week of vacation next year to chose between WDW and HHI, and he chose HHI.

My only regret from our HHI trip was that we were not there long enough to enjoy all the restaurants we wanted to try.
If you have a car, you will have no problems.
And in walking distance, San Miguel's was fabulous.

Dinner on HHI in the summer is at minimum a 2 hour event unless you go early, before 5PM. Other times of the year are fine. There are several restaurants within a very short drive. Also the Publix down at Sea Pines circle sells fried and roasted chicken that is very good.

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences. We will be renting a car. We will look forward to our first trip to DVC @ HH!

Dinner on HHI in the summer is at minimum a 2 hour event unless you go early, before 5PM. Other times of the year are fine. There are several restaurants within a very short drive. Also the Publix down at Sea Pines circle sells fried and roasted chicken that is very good.

There are so many discount and early bird specials that it can really be beneficial to go to dinner fairly early. Many actually combine the early bird and any other discounts.

Dare I admit this? DH had one week of vacation next year to chose between WDW and HHI, and he chose HHI.

Oh I am SO thrilled to read this! We have a week booked at HHI for next Sept. and for some reason we just can't get excited about it (well, I can't)! We really want to do something different this year (not Disney), and a beach vacation sounded fun (and we can drive there), but I've just been a little blah about it.

Just another quick suggestion - there is a Whole Foods really close to the resort and they have great entrees and salads that are carry out - we enjoyed picking up some of those on the evenings we just wanted to relax in our room or eat on our balcony!

HHI is great in September, less crowded and still in the mid to upper 80's. They also have a great beach. Savannah is also nice and, if you don't mind the drive, Charleston is great for a day trip. It's too bad the resort is so far from the beach. I've never stayed there but I go on a golf trip every Sept and have seen it several times.

This is an excellent suggestion. I had never thought about doing this. We do get a little tired of eating out each evening, but really don't want to do much cooking; so this would be a great compromise.

Just to avoid possible confusion... it's Fresh Market, not Whole Foods. Very similar concept, but very different if you're driving on 278 and looking for a sign.
