We would like to try a stay at HHI and we have a few questions for you experts.. :)
1) What airport would we fly into?
2) We'd prefer not to rent a car. Is there a shuttle service that would take us from the airport to the resort? We realize it won't be provided by Disney but what service have others used?
3) Without a car available are there restaurants nearby that we could use?

Thank you in advance for your responses! :sunny:

1. Either Savannah GA or Hilton Head (it's small but served by USAirways I think).

2. Don't know.

3. Yes, you can walk over to Shelter Cove and there are several restaurants there--- but having a car would help you explore the island and there is a lot to do unless you are strapped for time.

I'm sure that the resort could recommend a taxi or car service that could provide transportation from either of the airports. Give them a call. They are usually knowledgeable and helpful. I would also recommend renting bikes if you don't have a car. You can easily bike to some of the restaurants and to the Piggely Wiggley grocery store.

I can't imagine being at HH without a car. Even if you just want to get groceries -- you could ride your bike to Piggly Wiggly -- but not be able to carry much. It really would limit your restaurant choices also.

The shuttle service we have used from the Savannah airport (actually called Savannah/Hilton Head International) is Grayline Tours. It used to be called Lowcountry-something-or-another, but was bought out by Grayline a few years ago. I can't remember exactly what the cost was, but I thought it was pretty reasonable considering the distance. They use the large van-type vehicles, not limos or Town Cars. :moped:

I can only remember ONE time in our many trips to HH that we actually saw a taxi. (Not really looking for them, LOL.) I really don't think that they're very common on the island. You might want to call Guest Services at the resort with your questions about the shuttle and taxis.

Some of the restaurants at Shelter Cove are very nice (some I'd skip), but you will really be missing a LOT of what Hilton Head has to offer if you don't check out others.

In any case, enjoy yourself. We just got back home after our week there and I'm missing it already!

I am at HHI right now and I will ask about getting around the island without a car, but to tell you the truth, like others have said... a car is helpful. Give me a day to two to find out and I will post an update.

But if your fine with just hanging at the main resort and the beach house, and walking to the limited dining choices you can have a lovely stay here without a car. Nice and relaxing.

:wave2: Thank you to all you have responded and I will wait to see your addtional post LauraBearz. Like all of you, I'm all for the car rental. My DH just wants to relax, no car, no driving.

Thanks again :sunny:

I can not imagine being at HHI without a car. Your DH may want to relax, but driving around HH and Savannah is very easy. You are a long way away from the airport plus unless you just want to eat at the few restaurants right there at Shelter Cove you will be out of luck.
