Can anyone tell me how long it would take to drive from Hilton Head to Myrtle BEach? Husband an avid golfer and would like to do both!!!

4 hours one way. Tell him to enjoy the 30+ golf course in HH and Bluffton instead!!! :)

A closer option (2.5 hours) is Kiawah Island near Charleston. It is considered a top golf destination. The Ryder Cup has been held there, along with many other highly ranked tournaments.

Thanks for the info! I don't really know very much about Myrtle Beach (except the golf!)..................what is it like and what is there to do there?

Myrtle Beach is great fun but a different experience than Hilton Head. They call Myrtle Beach the "Redneck Riveria" but we find it very festive. There are many mini-golf and go-cart places as well as mega outlet shopping, a waterpark, amusement park and a huge stretch of white sandy beach. The travel channel listed it as one of the top ten family beaches in the US. We have a great time when we go there, my DD loves Margaritaville, but we don't go there to relax like Hilton Head.

The Redneck Riveria??? Where did that come from??

Just another darn Northern messing with Southern Hospitality and Charm!!

Actually, minnie hit the highlights pretty well (including MEGA outlets), but I might have refrained from the Redneck ... comment. lol

She missed great seafood (more variety of restaurants than at HH and possibly lower prices) and more restaurants in general. Also missed two great retail complexes in Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing (each received the award for Best Retail Development in SC in different years). Broadway has Margaritaville, Landry Seafood, IMAX, SC Aquarium, Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, etc., and lots of night-time entertainment. Both have onsite rides/activities for children ages 4-16 or so. Next June the first Hard Rock Amusement Park will be open (I think that is the month). Their website features some pretty intense rides. That should be interesting!

Many shows similar to Branson Missouri. Carolina Opry, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, Alabama: mostly country but several religious-type musicals. Oh, great golf course selection with all the big course designers there someplace!

And, finally, minnie hit it right on the head: don't go there expecting to relax!

Ha! ha! you guys are great!!!!! Ok, so now some more questions!
What is the Marriott resort like at Myrtle Beach? How difficult would it be to get into for a DVC swap in July?
Is Charleston worth a visit? Has anyone stayed at the Charleston Place?
Finally, can you play the golf courses on Kiawah Island without staying there?!

Oh no I didn't mean to offend anyone. My DH's family is from Tenn. and that is what they call Mrytle Beach.

That's what everyone calls Myrtle Beach.

I've lived in Charlotte for 4 years now and still haven't made it down to Myrtle Beach. When folks here say they're going to the beach, they usually mean Myrtle Beach.

Until I read this post, I hadn't though of combining a visit to Myrtle Beach with a stay at HHI. It sounds like a great idea!

No offense taken, Minnie. I have never heard that phrase before regarding MB. Must be either the Greensboro in me or the New York in me .... passed me by!

Regarding Charleston question from OP, it is most definitely worth the visit. Charleston is maybe half way between HHI and MB, and the historic homes and location would be very much in contrast to your beach stays.
Never been to Charleston Place, but there are some great hotels in Charleston (the Omni comes to mind). Excellent timeshare in Charleston itself - Lodge Alley Inn, a Bluegreen property.

The Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort and Spa at Grande Dunes is very nice, about 3-5 years old and on a nice stretch of the beach. Here is their website:

I never swap out DVC, so can't help you there.

Good luck with your travel plans!

Yes, you can play on Kiawah without staying on the island. The Ocean Course at Kiawah is probably Charleston's most well known golf course but it is definately not the only one--there are lots of them all around Charleston.

Charleston Place and the Omni Hotel are actually the same. It is the Omni Hotel at Charleston Place. I believe that it is still a part of the DVC Concierge Collection. I stayed there when it opened and it is a beautiful hotel, it is also very conviently located to most of the touristy stuff in downtown Charleston.

Try this website for KI golf: www.kiawahresort.com/

It's a gorgeous place to visit...no where else has a drive like the one onto KI. The Ocean Course is their premiere course (and the most challenging) but there are several others to choose from....a second recommendation is Turtle Point, it's more of a "links" style. My dh likes playing Osprey Point. There are a couple of private courses, but you'd have to know a member (River Course and Cassique). If you don't want to stay downtown on points try booking a golf package with a room at The Sanctuary, a five star resort (pricey, but hey! you've got that great exchange rate working in your favor). But don't miss visiting downtown Chas. as well.
