Hilton Head Seafood Restaurants

From searches it seems that the Sea Shack, Hudson's, and the Old Oyster Factory are the best. Do you have an opinion? I would be happy to eat seafood three nights during our week stay, so I may try all of them!!! If you had to rate them, which would be your favorite and which might you leave out?

Is there still a Tony Roma's there? If not, is Sticky Fingers there? We always like a night of ribs. And, we have been to the Japanese steakhouse a couple of times, too. Any suggestions of either ribs or Japanese?

My plan is to go out at least 4 or 5 nights out of 7, and to bring in a rotisserie chicken or two for the other nights. We will probably get some groceries for the mornings/snacking and have lunch either on the beach or come back for cold cuts.

We weren't too crazy about the resort options - we've been to the barbecue and the meal at the Beach House but thought we would skip them this time - we'll be there 4th of July week and I know it will be crowded. (Of course, the restaurants will be crowded, too!!) Does anyone know if any of the restaurants take reservations or call ahead seating???

We just returned from HHI on Sunday and I have a few thoughts about food

- I don't eat seafood but my wife and six year old daughter do. We went to the Crazy Crab for lunch (not the one in Sea Pines, but the one on 278) and the Sea Shack for dinner. I think my family enjoyed the Sea Shack better, but thought the Crazy Crab was also very good. We did Crazy Crab at lunch and the restaurant was pretty empty. At the Sea Shack you would need to arrive about a half hour before opening in order avoiding a long wait. For what it's worth, I enjoyed cheeseburgers at both places!

We didn't so Sticky Fingers this time, but went there last year and thought it was quite good.

We also did the Tuesday BBQ and had fun...the food was good, but IMO the games and pool activities make it a very fun evening. We did skip the Thursday shrimp boil, as we went last year and didn't think it was worth the money.
 
We ate at Kingfisher (just across the bridge) a couple of weeks ago for the first time and were very impressed. Their Shrimp and Grits were absolutely the best I've ever had. We've also eaten at Scotts and had good crab cakes there. We also like Old Oyster Factory. We don't really like Hudsons that much and have never been to Sea Shack.

Tony Roma's closed a couple of years ago. Also, if you want to drive over to Savannah, we really liked Uncle Bubbas (Paula Deen's brother) place. Finally, we always eat at San Miguels for Mexican food.
 
Tony Romas is closed but there is Sticky Fingers and the Smokehouse for ribs. Love the early birds at Kurama (seafood, etc.) and Marley's - great atmosphere! Always love the Sea Shack - but get there when they open for lunch or dinner - busy! If you like breakfast or burgers out - give Harold's a try. Just back two weeks ago and had a wonderful trip.:banana:
 

We've eaten and Scott's Fish Market (2x), the Mexican place in Shelter Cove, Hudsons (3x), Nick's (Steak/Seafood) (1x), and Crazy Crab (1x)

IMHO:
Scott's Fish Market - convenient and nice outdoor atmosphere with music - not bad but overpriced for the quality. I got their fish special and it was good the first time we went (although I've never heard of serving mashed potatoes with fried fish?) Crab cakes are the style with lots of "goop" in addition to the crab meat - very wet and saucy - I would not get them again.

Crazy Crab - they use MSG in their fried seafood coating :worried: . Boiled shrimp were fine. If you can eat MSG - it looked like good seafood.

The Mexican place gave my mom food poisoning. I actually liked it. The kid's tacos are covered in a spicy sauce that my kids did not like at all. That said - really great atmosphere.

Hudsons - my favorite by a long shot. The oysters are fresh and fabulous (we always get the sampler as an appetizer). The best crab cakes I've ever had - almost all lump crabmeat without too much seasoning to distract from the taste of good, fresh seafood. We've seen dolphins every time we've eaten here. To be honest, I'd drive all the way from Atlanta to eat at Hudsons.

Nick's - fine for a steak and seafood place - but a little on the pricey side.
 
When you get there, ask the CM that does most of the nature walks and talks (can't remember her name right now...Sandy maybe). She is a little older than the other CMs and very friendly and helpful. When we were there, there was a couple asking her about seafood places and she pretty much turned up her nose at most of the "favorites" that you hear mentioned here. I don't remember the names, but she told them about two that all the locals know about. Seems like one of them you went to by turning at the first traffic circle and it is all the way out on the water somewhere. I'm sure any of the CMs who have been in the area for a long time can help you out with the best advice for price, quality and atmosphere.
 
There is a Tony Roma's here in Savannah. It is right on Bay St.

If you come to Savannah, and, make it down to Tybee, go to the North Beach Grill near the Lighthouse. It looks like a dive, but, the food is heaven. If you go out on the beach from there, you can look across Tybee Roads (the main channel) and see the beach on Hilton Head.
 
We have been many times and here are our choices:

Love Old Oyster Factory and have had great meals there each time.

Scott's in shelter cove-ate there about 4 years ago and it was very good and superb service, but haven't been there lately.

Kingfisher- have eaten twice and it was very good both times..shrimp specials are wonderful and its convenient. Have not been there late when the live music starts, though.

Hudson- very crowded-waited almost an hour in the summer-and just average for food....very large menu though. won't do that wait again.

Frankie Bones is a fun restaurant with full bar and menu that is themed for the Rat Pack of Sinatra days. Great food, especially lobster mac and cheese-amazing...everyone's meal was great from steak to mahi mahi....really nice meal out.

When you check in to the resort, ask for the restaurant guide with the menus. There is also a publication you can pick up at some places called Taste. Both can be very helpful in trying to decide where to eat.

In particular, the restaurant guide tells which places will take reservations. (In the summer there are relatively few.) What has worked well for us is to decide early in the day where we want to go and make sure we get there early. The early bird specials can be great values.

When we're there in the summer, we try to eat in our villa and make use of the grills around the resort as much as possible. Kind of fits with the theme of relaxation. :hippie:
