We are considering a 4 day trip to HH. We have been to Vero, so I would love some comparisons between the 2. We have a 3 year old and are just looking to relax, see the sights, etc. (we don't golf) We love Vero - but were just there recently so are looking to try something else.

Do you fly into the HH airport and does anyone know of any airlines that fly non-stop from Boston to HH?

Am I correct that there is not an on-site restaurant for dinner?

Is a rental car needed and if so, are they available at the airport?

The HH Airport is very small and thus does not have many flights into it. You really have two choices available to you outside of HH: you can fly into either Savannah or Charleston. Savannah is closer and you should arrive within two hours. Charleston probably has more available flights, but is a longer drive, 3-3.5 hours. Either city would make a lovely addition to a vacation simply for sightseeing.

As far as the DVC resort, there is no restaurant on premises. There are NUMEROUS restaurants of every trype available to you outside of the resort. You should really enjoy HH. We fell in love with it very quickly and are presently awaiting our closing.

Enjoy your trip!!

Savannah is not 2 hours away by car, but rather about a 45-minute drive. You can rent a car there, including National. There are no sit-down restaurants within the resort, but they do have a two snack bar types which also serve burgers, chicken fingers, etc. at both the resort itself and the beach house. There are also several very nice restaurants right over the bridge within walking distance. I would, however, recommend renting a car. Hilton Head is beautiful--you will love it!

There is no direct flights that I know of in or out of Hilton Head airport, unless you are from Charlotte, NC. THat being said, USAir flies from Boston to Charlotte and then to Hilton Head. The flight takes about 4.5 hours. The flight to Savannah, which is closer than Charleston, takes about three hours, and then you have to drive for about an hour.

The Hilton Head airport is less than 15 minutes from the resort, and that is including time to return the rental car, at the airport.

As for restaurants, there are none on property, but aleast four are in walking distance from the main lodge. Almost as far from the lodge to the restaurant, as from the main logde to furtherest end of the property.

Hope this helps..

We were at HH last Fall, and at VB a few weeks ago. While our kids are grown and out, it appeared to me that HH had lots more activities that involved / entertained kids and that the staff was much more into providing a family experience. I was a bit disappointed in VB with their business meetings, wedding tent, etc. It seemed much more like a regular hotel atmosphere at VB. HH had beach walks, marsh walks, campfires, story telling, fun at both pools, etc. Also, there are restaurants, coffee shops, small gift shops, etc within an EASY walking distance of HH.

However, I would not recommend staying more than a few days at either place without a car, if you have children who need to be entertained. If it's just adults who really want to relax, then I could handle both places for about five days without a car.
