We are going to spend a week at Hilton Head the first week of April.
We have never been there before, and I'm wondering about a few things. First...the fishing excursion. Has anyone done this before, what did you think of it, or is it better to charter a fishing boat outside of what Disney offers?
Second...the kayaking - is it something 17 year olds would enjoy?
Third...has anyone done the dolphin excursion, would you recommend it?

Most of all, is the first week in April the right time for all of the above? Or is it cold?

TIA

We have done all 3 excursions and I would reccomend all of them. The kayaking takes place in the marsh behind the resort and you may even have dolphin come right up to the kayak. The Dolphin Tour is great, it also takes place in the marsh and out into the sound. There are about 300 dolphin who reside at HH year round- so there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy them. The fishing excursion leaves right from the resort marina and IMO, is far superior to the larger fishing charters since it will be limited to just your group. We have caught about 8 species of shark, redfish, rays, Spanish mackeral (it was legal size and we enjoyed that one for dinner), jacque , cobia and several other species - besides the dolphin that come up to the boat begging! ;)

The weather in early April will range from the upper 60s to the low 80s and the pools are heated. The ocean may still be a bit chilly for swimming, but the beach is wonderful.

Enjoy! :)

A couple of years ago we went during the last week in March and had pretty nice weather. On most days it was warm enough to swim and lay by the pool. We did have one or two very windy, chilly days where we did other things instead of swim. We did do the dolphin excursion through Disney, and it was the highlight of our trip.

Hey Doc, Is the dolphin tour you speak of a Disney run excursion? We're headed there in June :beach:

Both the Dolphin Tour and the Fishing Excursion (at least in the past) have been offered thru the resort by Low Country Tours. They all leave right from the marina dock at the resort.

There are other local tours available, but we've been very pleased with the quality and convenience of those recommended by the resort recreation staff.

Enjoy!

Thanks. We're definitely going to try the dolphin tour. :thumbsup2

Another vote for the dolphin tour. If possible request Scott for your guide. He was great!

Hi Diane-
We'll be there too- this will be our 3rd Easter trip to HH- and we swim daily in the ocean (well, at least my DH and kids do- I will only swim in the Caribbean or a heated pool, picky picky:goodvibes ) The ocean temps are around 68 which is the warmest it gets here on Long Island at the end of the summer! We have always had outstanding hot weather and a fabulous time.

I will just warn you to be prepared for just about anything weather-wise.

We used to go to HH the first week of April every year (it's spring break for the schools here). Several times we had temperatures in the 80s and it truly felt like summer! (Well, except for those ocean temperatures ;) )

One year, however, it was particularly cold and rainy. People were checking out and going home in droves. (Not just from the Disney resort, but the entire island!) We stayed (bad weather in Hilton Head is still better than being just about anywhere else!), but weren't able to do many of the things we planned.

The only bad thing was that the Mercantile at the resort had already packed up the sweatshirts for the season, so we had to go elsewhere for extra layers! :cold:

Also going first week of April.

Is the dolphin tour something I need to call in advance for to book?

Have any of you heard if both pools will be done with their refurbs?

We're another family that would highly recommend Scott from Low Country Nature Tours. We've done several excursions with Scott over the years --- dolphin tours, beach combing, fishing.

We love the fishing. It's been the highlight of the week for my kids over the last couple of years. We've caught sharks and sting rays over the years. Some have been huge.

The dolphin tour has been just as exciting. We now chose to do the beach combing instead of the dolphin tour as on the way out to Dufuski Island, we see just as many dolpins as we had doing the dolphin tour alone. With the beach combing, it's done at low tide and we get off the boat and look for star fish, sand dollars and all sorts of shells and other things. It's really a lot of fun!

We have never had a problem booking the tours when we arrive. If you prefer, Scott's phone number is 843-683-0187.
