Hilton Head next May? What is there to do?

Considering a stay here but wondering what there is to do?

If you mean what is there to do at the resort, the resort has its full compliment of activities all year round. We haven't been there in May, but in late April. I'd expect it will be perfectly warm enough to swim in the pools too. The Island will be "up and running", but no weekly fireworks.

We love Hilton Head. We go in late May. Everyday is a pool day. Half the days are beach days. It's really relaxing. Rent bikes and ride around on the beach. Sleep in and eat lunch late. The kids always love the lifeguards and all of the activities that they manage. Plus just visiting shadow the dog. We go over to the lodge and get free cookies in the afternoon. We all have fun. We are stressful type a people and HHI just calms us down.

We went late May last year and fell in love with the place. Plenty to do. We did a private dolphin cruise, kayaked, played at the pool and the beach, toured some ruins and the lighthouse, played mini golf, had some great meals, did the coastal discovery museum, etc.

Oh and there is daily crafts for the kids and activities in the evening; like movie nights or bingo nights.

Has anyone taken the boat to Savannah? That sounds like a nice day.

We didn't take the boat to Savannah. But we did stay 2 nights there prior to our HHI stay. We absolutely loved it there! I would recommend a trolley tour with on and off privileges, as well as a ghost tour at night (this was one of the highlights for my kids). The town is gorgeous and there is plenty to see and do, as well as many restaurants to try. We also popped over to Tybee Island for a couple hours, wasn't as impressed, but the kids liked the Fort there.

We plan to stay 2 nights in Savannah before our HHI stay in October! I've been looking into the ghost tours, but can't decide which one to take. Did you do a walking one or a riding (trolley, carriage) one? Which company did you use? Thanks for letting me tag onto this thread!

We used Old Savannah Tours for our daytime trolley ride around town, which provided off and on privileges during the day. They had actors in period clothing at some of the stops which added to the fun of it especially for our kids - like Forest Gump, etc. I would recommend them.

Then for the ghost tour we used Southern Strolls. I would highly recommend him. He keeps his groups smaller, makes the tour age appropriate for the kids and how they are acting (our youngest was newly 7 then) but loved it! His stories were all based on true or passed down stories, it wasn't like he made up things to try to scare you along the way.

I also would recommend Paula Dean's restaurant, Zunzi's Take Out and City Market Café to dine at!

We'll be there May 2017. Never done Dufeske (sp) Island or the boat to Savannah
Sounds like fun!

We did a horse drawn carriage tour of Beaufort south carolina. It goes through the historic district and we loved it. If you have little kids there is a nice childrens museum in hilton head that my kids enjoyed.

If memory serves me correctly, it took us less than an hour to drive from Savannah to HH.

Hilton Head is not like a "theme park" vacation. It is a lot more relaxing and low key. Savannah to Hilton Head is about an hours drive. A day in Savannah is worth it. I recommend The Crab Shack on Tybee Island. IMHO shopping in Savannah is better than on Hilton Head.

The resort has a full complement of activities for the kids every day. Movie nights, camp fires with S'mores, games at the pool. The pool has a nice water slide which our 7 year old grandson loved. One night was pirate night with face painting, games etc. There are shuffleboard, basketball courts, bag toss etc scattered around the resorts. They also have a lot of charcoal grills.

The beach is always open it just depends on the weather that week. When we went in July the ocean was very warm. There is a Kroger grocery store less than a mile away from the resort. It has a lot of vacation type stuff (beach toys, chairs, towels, boogie boards etc.). There is a shuttle to the beach but we typically drove. You can get to the beach before the beach house opens, but bring your own towels.

There are also a lot of non disney activities on the island. We rented bikes (a lot cheaper compared to Disney), went on a Dolphin watching cruise and went shark fishing. Dennis Connor's Stars and Stripes is docked at Hilton Head and if you are into sailing you can take a trip on his boat. For the lower elementary set there is a pirate cruise which the 7 year olds loved.

There are also a lot of excellent restaurants on the island. If you are a foodie you won't be disappointed.

We spent five days this past May at Disney's HHI Resort with two other couples (all of us "about 60 yrs of age") in one of the grand villas. As others have said, it is not like a theme park vacation. We found it to be a very relaxing trip. Our villa was gorgeous, the weather was very good......except one day (the day we had planned for Savannah!) it rained very heavily all day long .....so bad that CM's had sump pumps getting water off the walkways......it was literally almost to their knees as they were pumping. We couldn't leave our villa at all that day.......we were able to sit on the covered porch facing the marsh in the morning but by lunch the rain was battering the porch also. Fortunately, we all had a good book with us and several bottles of wine to share and spent the afternoon inside reading, drinking wine and snacking on fruit, cheese, and crackers! We had dinner out every night (except the rain day) at a few excellent restaurants....one we visited a second time......Scot's Fish Market... right across the bridge from the Disney resort. We had a wonderful time during the late morning/afternoon hours just lounging by the pool......one day we took the shuttle over the Beach House and lounged by that pool and walked on the beach a little bit......just a very relaxing few days. We visited Charleston for two days before we arrived at Hilton Head and that was also a nice visit.....but a bit further drive than Savannah......I believe Savannah is less than hour drive whereas Charleston was about 2 hrs 20 minutes.....still an easy drive. Unfortunately, we didn't get to Savannah this trip because of the rain......but, we do plan to visit HHI again so will eventually get there.
