We're headed to HHI for the first part of the Memorial Day Weekend (dep on Sunday to return home). Have never stayed there before and was just wondering if there are certain things we should take advantage of while we are there besides the beach. It's me, DG and DD (9 months in May). We arrive on Thursday before Mem Day.

There is so much to do:
Gullah Geechee culture tours, Butterfly tours, monkey island, Pinckney Island, The Hilton Head Choral Society does a Memorial Day concert that is outstanding, kayaking the coastal creeks.
For my tastes the water is still too cold in May to swim in but that is entirely dependent on where you are coming from. I've seen Canadians swim in the middle of winter here when it's 50 degrees.

What/where is this monkey island? That's a new one to me. But then, we just discovered Lake Mary's rookery island last trip, so I'm sure there are lots of little islands I haven't found yet.

It's a a federally protected, no access island of rhesus monkeys near Hilton Head. You can't officially go there but you can scout around a find someone who can take you close enough that you might see one. Several thousand of them live there with around 500 a year being captured and taken to research labs.
You can sit for hours and see nothing. But once you see one you see a ton of them. They are beautiful to watch and absent a trip to India you aren't going to see truly wild rhesus monkeys in this country.

Thanks so much! We are really looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend away but we always enjoy taking in the local culture and scenery...
