I think I may have posted this on the wrong board before - so I am going to ask here

We are new DVC owners (YAY) and it came with points for 2011 (that are now banked and must be used by March 2013)

We are NOT planning on returning to WDW till 2013 (I won a OMDD trip so we are going to DL in September and we just returned from WDW in Feb (when we bought DVC)

So we will lose 60 points if we don't use them - I looked and we could do a one night sat night stay at HH in june over f-day weekend (we live 2 hours from HHI) Is it worth it to go and stay for one night or should we try and rent our points?

Worth is subjective, so only you can decide if it is worth the time and money to drive over.

Have you been to HHI before?

We love the DVC resort at HHI. I would say "go for it" if there are any rooms available. It is a beautiful resort. You could get there early on the day you check in and even if your room is not ready, plenty to see and do at the report and on the island.

no - I haven't - that's kinda why I was asking if it is worth going to for one night. We do one night stays in myrtle beach all the time... I guess I was hoping someone who has been there might tell me yes it will be great, or no- you won't have enough time it's just a waste -

thanks - this is what I was wondering :)

We were planning on getting there early and doing stuff around there - then after we check out hitting paris Island (DH is retired marine)

Do 2 nights if you can but if you can go fairly early in the AM and return later in the day the following day, I think it's reasonable to do so. OTOH, I do not think HH is a reasonable location to stop over on a trip if you're just looking for a place to stay the night. The roughly hour each way off I-95 makes this a poor option just to stop over.

Then yes go for it. One night will not allow you to see and do everything like tours, etc.

But you can definitely do a few things before you check in and then have a nice dinner.

It will let you see the resort for future trips, we love it there.

It wouldn't be a stop-over - we live in Charleston, and it would be a one night trip - I have checked and during just there are no 2 weekend nights together so it would have to be a one night - sat night stay

What kind of tours are offered? I saw some of the posts of people going to Savannah and to Charleston, but we live in Charleston and plan to do Savannah later in the fall.

Sorry, I realized your situation but was answering a broader question in case others were reading. Getting a little more info and thinking more on the question, I think you should consider an exchange instead. You should be able to get something for a few days at HH or MB but likely more shoulder season. Or else I'd put off the trip to a time when the points were still good but you could get a longer time. You could also rent them if you wanted.

You could book one night and ask to be wait listed for the 2nd night. It may come through and it may not. But worth putting you name down.

I could stay at the resort for a night in a heartbeat. Get there early. They will give you the parking pass for the beack house so you could spend the day over there or hang out at the resort. Especially of you stay later the next afternoon.

I did it about three years ago. I was on the road going back home from VB. I stopped in Savannah and went "hmmm - so close to HH" and I'm not ready to go back to reality. And I went to a payphone and booked the night.

I have to tell you - and this sounds weird I know - but it remains one of my best DVC memories - one night. The joy of spontaneity helped.

I checked out and went to the beach house the next day.

HHI is much nicer than Myrtle Beach in every conceivable way. Much less crowded, less commercial, better food, and it's close to Savannah! What more could you want! :)

The resort is lovely. Once you cross the little bridge from the main island, you are in another world.

Go, Go and enjoy!

The tour we liked the most is dolphin tours. We arranged it through the resort.

We did one night at Hilton Head last December on our way from Virginia to WDW and it was great! In the past, we always stopped at some random hotel off of 95 and this year we decided it would be a great opportunity to check out the resort in Hilton Head. We had points to use and it was a great decision! We were able to get a one bedroom and it made all the difference in the drive down. We had room to stretch out, a kitchen to make a nice breakfast, time to stroll around the resort, sit on the balcony, etc. We liked it so much that we are going again in a few weeks to stay longer. We didn't mind the drive from 95 and, in fact, had friends who did the same thing and also loved it. I would think nothing of a 2 hour drive for a 1 night stay in a beautiful place. One of my favorite places to visit is 3 hours away and I often go down on Saturday morning and come back on Sunday night. Totally worth it!

We did the a one night stay in a studio driving back from WDW to NC. Our family fell in love with the place. So much so we booked a week there for the next vacation we took (last Oct). Best place to go of all the DVC resorts I think (except maybe Hawaii). We plan on going back again........ and again ..... and again. Once you go to HHI, you may never go back to Myrtle.

GO! Get there as early as possible on Saturday am - even though your room may not be ready, you can enjoy the beach, pool, etc. It will let you get a little sample of the resort - but be warned, you will want to come back for a longer stay soon!
