We've only been to HH once, and I cannot remember if there are grills on the grounds or on the decks. We will be back in December, and I want to be able to cook steaks and burgers out on the grill if possible.

Grills are not allowed on the balcony decks.

There are charcoal grills scattered thru the resort. There is a brick grill outside of Big Murgies Den in the lodge, a few pedestal grills along the marsh near building 18 and several at the far end behind the parking area near building 30.

We've found that getting some "MatchLite" charcoal- where you just light the bag itself - is the easiest way to deal with the charcoal. They sell that at the nearby Piggly Wiggly grocery.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Doc! There's just something about the casual feel of HH that makes me want to cook out--even in December!

Doc is correct regarding the matchlite and that there are several locatios throughout the resort. There is big grill outside the main lobby area near the room with the pool (name of area escapse me right now), there are several located elsewhere at the resort and are located on the map that they give you at check in.

I have to admit the absolute best one is located at end of the driveway of the resort near buildings 29 and 30. This is at the point where all the boats come in and out of Shelter Cove Harbor. They have a few adirondack chairs and is perfect to grill out, drink an adult beverage, read a magazine, enjoy a cigar (ooops) and let the kids climb the live oak. Also, there is a picnic table to have dinner if you want. We love the sun going down over the marsh there as well.

Bring some oil or pam to spray down the grill, they have some residual rust on the grates and bring some water in a cooler to douse the flames before you leave.

I agree with you in regards to wanting to grill out there !

Have Fun !

My wife is the grill queen. ;)

She had the grill fired up for a couple of meals last year at Hilton Head which were right by our building. We had some real nice/tasty burgers. :woohoo:

Thanks everyone for the great idea! We'll be in HH in Sept from Sun - Fri. Sounds like a great meal plan to me. Burgers on the grill, potatoes in the oven + no dishes to wash!

Put the potatoes on the grill wrapped in tin foil. :)

I was thinking the same thing, since I won't have an oven on my July 4th week trip. We are staying in a studio and grilling out sounds like the best way to go for us. Do you have a good grill recipe for those potatoes? Any other suggestions for grill cooking for studio guests? I mean the resort grills, of course.

Our family doesn't care for potatoes wrapped in foil -- the skins are too soft. So, we usually pierce the potatoes and pre-cook them in the microwave, then put them directly on the grill. Mmmmmmmmm :thumbsup2 Just be sure to turn them often so the skins don't turn to charcoal.

Another thing to keep in mind when grilling is that not everyone eats outside when using the grills -- whether it's the weather, bugs, or whatever. You can often grab someone's already heated grill and just add a little charcoal!!

Lol......maybe we can coordinate this! I want to grill early to avoid as many of the noseeums as possible.
Then again- the resort does the July 4th bbq....it was a mad house when we ate there last time. Not sure I want to do that again.

Time to start some serious planning!

Don't forget - zucchini, summer squash, bell peppers, mushrooms, are all great on the grill. As for the potatoes - we just throw them on with the tin foil - we salt/pepper/butter when done. Some people throw them directly on the coals - I don't. Just on a low grill.

Oh corn on the cob in the tin foil too. Janis
