Hilton Hawaiian Village

Could you please tell more about the surfing lessons? We will be staying at the HHV in December and some of us would like to take surfing lessons, especially DD15. I didn't realize they gave lessons right at the HHV beach.

Also, is it possible to walk to Waikiki Beach from the HHV?

Thanks so much for any info! :)

Yup, walk right out the back door. ;) You can't miss it.

Unfortunately, most hotels in Hawaii have small rooms. The only down thing about HHV was that the pool was pretty small. Otherwise it is a great place to stay....

Thanks for starting this thread I wasnt to stay there next year . I am getting a better idea of where I need to be .

Do you mean I can't miss the place where they give surfing lessons?

I know there is a beach right outside the HHV, but I meant is it possible to walk to the area of Waikiki Beach where most people go- the restaurants, shops, the more populated area of the beach.

The lessons are about 1 1/2 hours, which includes about 1/2 hour instruction on the beach first, it cost $85.00 each. They have to paddle out to the reef break, (the water is only about 3 feet deep there) and they go with the instructor. DS's went 2 different days, the first day there were a lot more people out there, and the ones taking lessons all held onto a rope that was anchored to some sort of post and waited for their turn. They each got to try and catch about 8 - 10 waves. The second day, there weren't as many people surfing and they just went out and could try to catch whatever they could. They did really well and were able to get up on the board almost every time! The second time there was also a photographer out there and we were able to buy a CD with their pictures. The first day they took lessons, they had Clyde Aikou, who has won many surfing championships. When DS saw his name on the sign where the beach rentals are, he told me he thought it was Eddie Aikou's brother, which it turned out, he was. If you go to the *********** store in Waikiki, you will see all sorts of items relating to Eddie. (DS knew all about him already).

DS's are 13, and they have been wanting to take surfing lessons here at home, so that was one of the things they really wanted to do in Hawaii. We have a good friend who surfs here and told us that in Aug. on Waikiki, it would be a good place to learn. You will be going in Dec. when the waves will be larger, so I don't know what the conditions will be , but you will be on the south shore of the island.

FYI, here is a link to a live cam in Waikiki of the Duke Kahanamoku statue, but you can see the beach behind it (This is at the far opposite end of Waikiki beach from the HHV). Since I have been back home, I keep checking it and wish I were back!

This is all probably more than you asked for, but once I start I get carried away!

HHV is on the western end of Waikiki beach, to get to the beach behind the hotels on the strip you can walk east down the beach.

Thanks so much for all the info! I'd love to get a CD with pictures on it of daughter's surf lessons! She has never surfed before, (after all Maine isn't known for super surf weather!), and she's a little nervous about it, but she really wants to try it. Sounds like your sons learned very quickly and had a good time!

I'm going to go check out the live cam link you provided. Thanks again! I appreciate all the information! :sunny:
