HillPete hits the High Seas
Cast of characters:
Hillary -- (the Hill of HillPete) old enough to know better
Pete -- (the Pete, oh wait, thats obvious) 35 going on 18
Ad-man -- DS 6 ½
Short Round DS 4 (hes neither short, nor round - not sure why we call him this)
Buppa My dad, ageless
Some background:
Our original plan was to take the 4-night cruise on the Magic from 12/26-12/30, then hit Kennedy Space Center for a couple nights and move on to WDW on 1/1 when the hotel rates plummet. My dad was all set to fly down, Pete and I and the boys are all set to drive down over 2 days (with a stop in Charlotte, NC very nice Marriott!
) starting on Dec. 24.
So December 20 rolls around and the phone rings. Its Karen, our TA from Small World Vacations (we liked her lots!), with some interesting news. The wise folks at DCL have overbooked the 4-niter, would we be interested in bumping to the 7-niter leaving on the day we were to return? Its a Western! she says, with glee in her voice. Somehow she knows this is my dream itinerary.
Without boring you with the details of many, many phone calls, Ill tell you this: Our bottom line was that we wouldnt do it if they asked us to take a lower-level cabin (we had booked a cat 7 and the cat 11 across the hall). If they could match our cat. level, wed take the deal. Karen calls back and says they are offering cabins 6648 and 6650. Now before you all run and get your Passporters and look up the rooms, Ill just tell you, they are both cat 6!!!!!!
AND, they are nearly all the way aft, so the verandahs were both very deep and spacious (think: Barb and Tony suite, but up one deck). Of course, we said yes.
So I scramble over the next three days to learn more about the new ports and check online to see what excursions are still available. We also cancelled KSC and switched our WDW ressies to the first week (we also switched from CSR or All-Star Music, more on that in the regular trip reports thread in a few days).
Quick recap before I go pick up Short Round at preschool:
1. We were going on a four-niter, now were on a 7
2. We got to the port after the busiest week of the year for the parks.
3. We didnt have quite enough time to adjust our thinking and do research about the new itinerary.
4. They didnt charge us any more $$ so were pretty happy about that.
5. I dont have a five, but four looked kinda skimpy.
Day 1: Embarkation
