Highchair at resorts?

Perhaps this should go on the resorts board, but when I called Disney the other day to confirm and add an extra day onto our VWL ressie this summer, the Disney CM asked if I would like a highchair put in the room. I told her that would be great, but now am wondering what the highchair is like? Is just wooden like at restaurants? Anyone have experiences with resort highchairs?

Also, these next two questions are off topic, but I'm having a dilemma with my 9 month old and napping. When I put her down for a nap, she wants to sit up and play, or kneel by the railing and "teeth" there. I am constantly laying her back down because I KNOW she's tired (eyes are practically rolling back in her head, constantly yawning while sitting up, rubbing her eyes, etc) but she gets right back up again! This can go on for up to 45 minutes! Now, she is starting to sit up in the middle of the night and do this same "routine" at 1-2am! ANY ADVICE??? I'm just about at my wits end.

Also, this may sound strange, but I'm going to begin weaning my DD from breastfeeding and was wondering if there is a "better tasting" formula? I tried giving her Similac about 6 times this past week and she gagged every time. It seemed to have a very bitter odor, is this the case for all formulas? Any advice?

Thanks!
Kris

While we haven't stayed at VWL, the highchairs at BWV and SSR are the wooden types, so I'd make the assumption that they'll be the same at VWL. If you're wanting a more traditional type you could always rent one from A Baby's Best Friend (abbf.com). My DS's first trip was at 9 months and we just sat him on our laps if we fed him in the room (we stayed at POR on his 1st trip), but his meals were typically in the stroller when we were out and about and it worked out just fine. When we sat down at restaurants he sat well in the wooden highchairs too.

On the sleeping - We're a Weissbluth family, I highly recommend his book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" I'm not sure the exact reccomendations for your situation wiht DD, but I'd be inclined to let her sit up and do her thing and let her lie down on her own when she gets tired. We had a crib chewer too...and a crib that didn't lend itself to those teething covers.

As far as formula flavors - we used Enfamil with DS with no problems - personally I think they all smell icky. I wonder if she gagged from the nipple size...was she getting more liquid than she's used to? Just a thought.

Good luck with everything - WDW at that age was a lot of fun!!!

Hi,
Sorry I don't know about the highchair in the room.

As far as the sleeping goes (I have DS almost 1...yea!). I experienced the same thing. If she is not hurting herself, then I would just let her be. She will eventually fall asleep on her own. What is happening is she is learning so much at this age, it makes it hard for her to sleep. My son, when he started to stand up, would do this in his crib in the middle of the night. I would hear noise, go into check and he would be trying to stand in his crib and still mostly asleep. It was a little worrisome to me, but I would lay him down and he would go right back to sleep. (It only lasted a week.)

So, I would try letting her soothe herself to sleep and see what happens.

I am still nursing ds and I have tried to give him formula on several occasions and he didn't like any of it! So, I am truley weaning him! He is down to 3 times a day some days 4! But, breastmilk is so sweet compared to formula it may take a few tries to get her used to the formula.

There is one formula that most closely tastes like breast milk. I can picture it in my head, but can't remember the name of it. I'm thinking Carnation Good start, but wouldn't want to bet my life on it. Try mixing the her bottle with half formula and half breast milk. Then decrease the breast milk as she gets use to the flavor.

Sorry don't know about the high chair.

As long as she can't fall out of her crib, maybe she'll get bored and put herself to sleep. My little one does.

ENFAMIL Next Step Lipil ... a milk based formula for babies 9-24 months..we get it at Target and my little one transitioned just fine from nursing to that. Now, if i could only get her to drink real milk i would be happy!

make sure you are using the slowest flow nipple possible...or the baby will get too much milk too fast...they are used to really having to work hard to get it and a fast flow nipple will cause them problems.

I have stayed at VWL and yes, the high chairs are the simple wooden kind you see in most restuarants. You'll have a table in your room so you can just put it right up to that. You might consider getting one of those tidydiner placemats or just some disposable ones but I never bothered with that w/my ds - just made sure the table was clean. He was a toddler by then though. If you want a regular high chair w/a tray, you might consider renting from www.abbf.com.

As for the sleep issues, I can't offer any advice. This is something we've never been able to get down completely, although it's getting better (read, preemie, + reflux & other health issue = sleep problems). We resorted to co-sleeping and while he now goes down in his own bed he still joins us almost every night (usually early morning hours). Oh well, they grow up so fast anyway, lol.

Formula does taste bad but babies don't have a great sense of taste until they're about 12-14mos or so (or at least that's what I've been told). You might try Carnation Good Start. A lot of people have good luck with that. We eventually just used the Cosco/Kirkland brand which is like Infamil and ds did fine with it. Since your dd is 9 months now, in a few months you'll probably be switching to whole milk so hopefully you'll find something that works soon! :)

hth!

Thanks for the advice on all topics! For her morning nap today, it took her 45 minutes before she finally quit the "morning exercises" in her crib and fell asleep. What an ordeal. She was up again "practicing" at 4:30 this morning! I hope this doesn't last too long! ;)

I bought Nestle Good Start and a small can of Enfamil. I will try one today at lunch. She is exclusively breastfed, because she never accepted a bottle! UGH! I did introduce the sippy cup at 6 months and she is doing quite well with it. I was going to now start giving her formula in it, too. Start with one feeding and work up from there.

I assume we'll be fine with the restaurant style highchair at the VWL. She doesn't seem to mind them when we go out to lunch/dinner.

Thanks everyone!
Kris

When I started my DS on whole milk at 1 year after being exclusively breast fed I put a small squirt of chocolate syrup in in. Not much, just enough to make it a little sweeter & he took it fine. After he got used to that I was able to eliminate the chocolate & he's been a big milk drinker ever since (he's 4 1/2 now)
