Not getting a flu shot? Many people do die from flu complications, I have a friend who lost her 10 month old.

The flu shot doesn't protect you from all forms of the flu. And you can still get the flu even with the flu vaccine.

People die of the flu every year. Some people can't fight it off as well as others for a variety of reasons.

But I am very sorry for your friend. I can't imagine losing a child.

I agree a flu shot isn't a guarantee (still didn't get mine), but I think people can underestimate the damage the flu can do.

But it places blame. There should be no blame in this case. The flu and pneumonia should not kill a healthy young person, regardless of the flu vaccine (which I still don't think is all that useful and I have never gotten because when I ask what it protects against, it ends up being a very small variety of flu viruses.)

Yes! These are exactly my feelings. No blame, just shock and horror.

It's registration time...second year French doesn't fit DD's schedule, so she registered for 1st year German next semester. This is her 3rd foreign language. Why? Oh and this makes 20 academic credits plus she's taking PE. It's complete insanity. I hope she drops something....

Hell week started last night, after the pledges were told last night was initiation, they hasd a ceremony, and then were doused with freezing water. Dd's is a tough kid, but I think he's so ready to be done. Pledging has been very physically and mentally demanding (and he was in great shape at the start). I can't wait until it's over, just amazoned him some giant chocolate.

Yikes to both! Twenty credits is a lot! DD is taking 18 this semester and she's feeling it right now. And we've been sitting through some games in the freezing cold with layers of blankets on and still freezing our butts off! (Poor players. ) I can't imagine being doused with cold water on top of that! Hot chocolate really is the best when you're frozen.

I know of three of my daughter's friends who were seriously thinking of changing, for various reasons, but not sure if they did decide to actually switch schools.

DD does have one "frenemy" who is transferring. My DD made some noise early on about transferring closer to home, but it looks like that's off the table now.

Dd is preparing to register for fall classes but her room mate may not come back, two girls she is friends plan to stay in school but are moving in with their boyfriends. Her cousin will start next year and we are hoping to get her in dd's room but not sure how long that will last, she isn't too enthusiastic about school. Annnnddd dd is in love.

She met a really nice guy and spends every extra moment she has with him. We really like him so we approve. But now she is backtracking on going away to university. She had already decided she wants to be a personal trainer. So she will begin the classes this summer to get certified.

I think where we are now is she will finish her AA and get certified as a personal trainer and in as many group exercise classes as she can and in weight training over the next year. Then we will see where the relationship is and what her decisions are. She will still be about half way to a degree in exercise science and she will be able to work in a gym.

And she is still training to be a wrestler and is starting to get noticed by some promotions. She is on the road with her brother, boyfriend (he is a wrestler too) and several of their friends almost every weekend. I don't see her giving that up soon.

I am a little disappointed but she is being smart about figuring out how she wants to accomplish her goals.

Our path for them isn't always their path. Was reading posts on Facebooks DCP page and one student asked whether the internship was "worth it" as his parents were giving him a hard time about accepting the internship. One woman gave her story-in brief-she ended up dropping out of college, becoming a roadie, worked a variety of jobs all over the world and is now a successful business owner due to all those experiences (her story was really neat), unconventional path to her success and contentment. That story has stuck with me as DD makes her decisions, as hard as it is sometimes! Sounds like your DD is carving her path

She really is. She truly seems excited about her future so it's hard to argue with that.

I thought most Universities have outlawed hazing? If discovered, they could yank their charter.

Dd's college just sent around some sort of anti-hazing pledge. Colleges are not turning a blind eye to it anymore.

I think it's gotten better, but I think they walk a fine line. I have seen him much, but I know there was a lot of exercise, cleaning, memorization, interviews, yelling - I'm sure he will fill me in over Easter weekend. When I pledged back in the day, hazing wasn't too bad, had our share of blindfolding and call outs, but it was so time consuming!

Almost end of year! Will be taking a load of stuff home this weekend and move out date is May 12th! DD got her summer classes she wanted at community college (and waayyy cheaper than at the big university)-she is taking physics and calculus II-her advisor for the CC thinks she is crazy (10 hours) and it rules out time for job but oh well. Will keep her ahead of game by a semester so she will not lose time doing internship this fall. Just finals to get through now

Things are going good here. DD declared her major and just registered this week for Fall classes. She is so excited to have more classes that are directly related to her major next year

She is done on May 9th so we will move the bulk of her stuff out the weekend before that. She is ready to be out of the dorms. Unfortunately it wasn't the experience we hoped she would have. He roommates were nice enough but they didn't click as "good friends" and they were slobs (dishes with week old food on the counters, no one but her emptying trash cans, hair all over the floor, drains, counters, etc) She said she is ready to be living at home full time again, LOL. She will commute next year so she won't have to worry about that.

She was trying to cluster all her classes on T, W, TH so that it would reduce the number of days she would have to drive, but she ended up having to add one class on Monday. But Wednesday will be the only day she has to fight rush hour commuter traffic in the morning. The other days she will go at 12 or 3, so that isn't too bad. She will have to deal with rush hour 3 days when she is done at 6, but at least she won't have to worry about being late for class (or she may stay and do homework at school for a while and come home when traffic dies down). Her other day won't end until 10 PM (yikes) but she won't have to go the following day so she can sleep in. Overall, she is pretty happy with next fall's classes and schedule.

He was invited to join, we got a letter in the mail. He was going to toss it. I kept it but we haven't acted on it. I had this talk with him yesterday after reading this thread and explained why it would be important for him to join. He has agreed to it, so we will hopefully take care of it this weekend.

He is applying to an in-state college for us here in NC, but there is a strong possibility we will be moving back to CA in a year, so he will be applying there as well. If he can get a scholarship to a school in CA, I will be thrilled as we won't have to pay out of state for the first year!

ETA: Oh my. I checked yesterday and the deadline is TOMORROW! Glad I looked! We are going to the office tomorrow to pay the dues. I wish we could do it online, but we can't.

Quoting myself just to update.

We did have him join PTK. He is finishing up his 3rd semester and doing well, but feeling like 5 classes is a bit much. But then when we went to sign him up for Summer and Fall, he wanted a full load, so, ok, we will keep plugging along.

He is looking at a college in CA to transfer to. We are going out this summer and will tour and get more info. He will finish up his AA here first, unless DH loses his job sooner than we expect, and in that case, we will move to CA now.

We will have to pay out of state for a year, but it will work out. The scholarships are few and far between I am hearing about CA state colleges right now. But starting locally at CC has been inexpensive, so one year of more will be ok.

How are everyone's kids doing?

Our CC students take that kind of load most summer semesters and they do great. Since so many are trying for a medical program, they have to get in as many maths and sciences as possible so summer is the time for those classes they don't want to take with anything else. She will do great, I am sure.



DD will be moving out over the next week. She made her "in ring" debut this past weekend. She will be in the ring with her brother most of the time. She is loving it. But due to shows every weekend and her dad and his pick up gone during the week, its taking a little longer than expected to move out. Next week is finals and the week after that she starts her programs to be certified as a personal trainer.
