This may sound like a silly question, but do HS kids take lunch pouches to school? If they don't how do they bring their lunch? DS starts HS tomorrow and he is not a kid that likes to buy school lunch so I wondered what the cool thing to do was.

my kids brown bag it when they bring their lunch to HS. One is a girl and the other a boy so its pretty universal.

Same here, boy/girl both use brown bags--they wouldn't be caught dead with a "lunch box" or lunch bag.

according to dd (10th grade) it's across the board. some use lunch pouches, some use paper sacks, some use retroish metal lunch boxes (do an internet search there's allot available out there). dd's new backpack actualy has an insulated lunch pouch built in (and there's two elastic straps to hold canned drinks)-and it was a backpack we got at a college bookstore.

if he's a lunch packer you might just have him throw the stuff into a bag in his backpack for the first week or so then he can see what everyone else is using and might come up with a suggestion of what he likes.

My kids did the same.

It was more an inconvenience factor though than not wanting to be caught dead.

They didn't want to have to trek all the way back to their locker to put the lunch box away. They wanted to just be able to dispose of everything and not have to worry about it. So, brown bags, plastic utensils, etc.

When DS started his freshman year he used the soft insulated lunch totes. For 10th, 11th and now that he's a senior, he just brown bags it . . .although, I can't see how he can stand drinking warm bottled water . . . But then again, he only takes either peanut butter crackers, leftover pizza and/or peanut butter and jelly . . .he's not a deli meat kid at all . . .it's pretty boring, right?

Seniors in my class bring lunch bags, brown bags, or plastic bags with their lunch. They stick their food in our culinary classroom's fridge in the morning. We have quite a few kids who bring their lunch so it's not a big deal here. :)

Just eat what the school gives you. It's not a big deal, I do it every day.

Mine brown bag it, the HS'ers at least. They don't use their lockers at all, carry their backpacks to every class. It's easier to use the brown bag, they throw out everything. With gym clothes, books and supplies, they don't have the room for the insulated lunch sack.

(FYI We did the walk-around, they give you seven minutes between classes. There is no way they can put their things in the lockers and go back and forth. They are lucky to have time to use the facilities in between classes.)

My middle schooler(as of tomorrow) and my 10th grader use brown bags. Not much time in between classes to go back to your locker.

I use a brown paper bag. It's so nice to be able to just throw everything away when you're finished and not have to worry about a lunch box, etc.

My senior has been brown bagging it since junior high. They only get a half hour for lunch, so "eating what the school gives you" is not easy when you have a large school and long lines for the cafeteria food. Most kids at her school just bring their own lunches too, they'd rather spend lunch eating and socializing with friends than standing in lines.

No lunch pouches or cutesy lunch boxes in high school, at least not at this one. Brown bags.

My son has packed (brown bagged it) all through high school because the school lunches where he goes are junk -- assorted breaded items that are full of fat and sodium. If your school has healthy choices, that's great. Please keep in mind that not all schools offer healthy options.

::yes:: My school lunches are gross. Even if I wanted to kill half of my lunch period waiting in line, I wouldn't because you couldn't pay me to eat that stuff (since I'm fortunate enough to be able to bring lunch from home. I realize that not everyone is).

Mine suck too. All you have to do is get over it and get exercise and you'll be completely fine.

HOw do people here in Florida or in any other really hot weather places do it. I would never pack a turkey or ham sand in a sack with nothing to keep in cold.

Mine aren't in HS yet but I was just curious.

Peanut butter & jelly. My 12 year old brother doesn't like peanut butter so he takes a bagel.

Not all schools even serve meals.

My teens have to pack lunches everyday. They both have insulated tote lunch boxes as do most of the kids in their school.

DD has a L.L.Bean lunch box. Has been using it since freshman year, now a senior.

Advantage to lunch box
- it is insulated and we throw in an ice pack. The water stays cold.
- She also has a place for her hand sanitizer, which remains in the outer pocket for the duration of the year.
- we can pack spoon and other non disposable items
- there is space for extra napkins, granola bars, mints, and other items.
