DH and I will be at HHI Sept. 19-24. A friend who lived in Savannah, GA says it is too hot in Sept. and it's hurricane season. For anyone who has visited the latter part of Sept. should we change plans? We quit going to the Outer Banks in NC as there was a hurricane each of the 3 times we went (July-Aug.). Thanks in advance!

HH is usually still warm in late Sep and the ocean will be delightful for swimming. Hurricane season is still applicable at that time, but that area has certainly been stable in recent years.

I think it's a great time to be there!

Enjoy!

At Hilton Head, if you want the best weather, it will coincide with hurricane season. However, there has not been a "direct hit" on HH in over 100 years. About 5 years ago, the entire SC/GA coastal area was evacuated, due to a hurricane warning, but that's the worst I can remember lately.

Twice we've been to HH just after a hurricane threatened the area. There were small branches down, some flooding, and the worst was that the beach house pool had to close for a couple of days because so much sand blew into it!

I wouldn't worry too much about the possibility of hurricanes, tho.

I thnk you should go for it! If you go to HH much later than late September, it may start getting too cool to really enjoy the beach.

Doc and Disneyaholic, thanks for your replies and putting my worries to rest. Now to the rest of the planning!

Hilton Head in September is beautiful. It's still hot, but most of the tourists are gone, and it is not so crowded. I love the fall here, it's one of my favorite times of the year! Don't worry about hurricanes....we don't and we live here. Most of our hurricane scares come before September. It really is a wonderful time to visit..........Enjoy!!

November and December are much chancier, with November being the better choice. It could be nice, but the weather is too cool for beaches and swimming, and chance of rain is much greater. These months are definately not as good as Sept., October. We can get weather in the 70's during Nov./Dec. but if we do, it's very transient. The weather gets better again mid March through May, then the summer heat sets in. Many love the summers here, but it is very hot. If you spend all your time at the beach or pool it's great though. I think you would be much happier here in Sept or Oct. In response to the person who wrote from Savannah saying it's too hot there in September. Savannah is still too hot in Sept. Although we are close to Savannah, our weather is much better since we get those cooling ocean breezes.

For several years I went to HH in September.

It is my favorite time to visit (and growning up I visited a lot, my Grandparents lived there for several years)
In about 10 September visits, I evauated a hurricane once and it actually hit Charleston.
The weather is wonderful and the majority of the crowds are gone.

If I had the chance, I would be back there this September. (Who am I kidding, if I had the chance I would live there like linco711. I really loved that place!)
