Okay...I did Hilton Head. This was not the best experience I've had with Disney. Mousekeeping was great...friendly and helpful. All too many people on the front desk were lacking in knowledge of even the resort itself.
Sunday - I drive down with Mom and my aunt... Mom is 76, not great on endurance and uses a hiking stick to get around (they keep trying to make her use a cane but canes are way too low...not sure how they are supposed to be beneficial but I digress). We get there after dark which is quite challenging if you've never been in the Hilton Head area before. There is not much in the way of lighting on streets or of signs. I check us in and there is confusion...I manage to straighten it out but the front desk person tells me in an unfriendly manner that she only has second floor units...but she discovers one in the one building with an elevator. She neglects to tell me its a smoking room. We decide to keep it and air it out. It wasn't too bad up until the end of the week when smokers moved into the studio next door. I did not like the lay out of the HHI one bedroom. None of the Disney ones were like this.
During the week it seems the elevator is out of order for about three days. I have NO idea what people in wheelchairs do under these circumstances...and niether does the front desk (I asked)!!! There were wheelchair bound people in the building during this time. My poor Mom had to go up what amounted to three flights twice. We had to stop in Big Murggies so she could rest. Fortunately her heart is good even if her endurance isn't. If anyone knows where I can write Disney about this I'd appreciate the info...because this was absolutely unbelievable and not particularly forgiveable. Thank god the elevator was working when we checked in and out.
We discovered that almost no one lives in Beaufort County AND works in the Hilton Head area. Not just the Disney staff (I didn't expect them to live there)...any place we asked for information employees kept telling us they weren't from there. We spent days trying to find "low country cooking". Finally one of the Beach House staff was a resident of Bluffton and gave us a reference to a place called PEPPERS PORCH. I highly recommend it. Directions...take 278 over the bridge. Turn left at the light after target on to SC 46. Follow SC 46 when it makes a right turn and PEPPERS PORCH will come up on the right. It looks like a house but what it is is a restaurant with an outdoor bar and a very large outdoor seating area with an average sized indoor seating area. For natives of NJ think Bar A but it isn't a night club.
Because of the company I kept I didn't get to do anything especially active other than shopping. The Beach House was quite nice. There is a Sam's Club in the area.
