Pardon me if these questions have been asked recently (I'm paranoid because of another recent poster "venting" about people asking obvious questions that were just answered).

Anywho...

1. What kind of internet access does HHI have? Dial up or wireless? I just want to check my email and bank statement daily.

2. Does HHI still only have VCR's?

3. We were going to go Paula Deen's restaurant (Lady and Sons) in Savannah. My MIL read some bad reviews that stated the food tasted like cafeteria food and the place isn't the same as it used to be since Paula and her sons have become bigger stars. Has anybody eaten there who can give me their opinion?

Thanks to my fellow DVCers!

HH has only dialup. There is one service (ISLC, I think) that has a special weekly rate for vacationers- $15 for the week. Make sure it's a local contact number though as calls of the island are long distance and you'll get hit with surcharges. The local phine co (Hargray) also provides dialup service.

The villas do have DVD s . I called last week to check for our upcoming trip to the resort and was told that there are DVD's in all villas (1,2 and 3 BRs).

Can't help with Savannah dining. My general feeling is that dining opinions vary widely - as do the menus.

Enjoy your trip! :)

As far as Paula Deen's place - I have friends that recently returned from eating there and they rave about how good the food was. It can be a wait to get in and parking can be a problem. It's a three story building. Kitchen is on the second floor. You eat on the first or third floors. I think there are banquet type rooms in the basement. My friends want to go back - they say its well worth the effort! So enjoy and report back!!

We also just returned from HH. When we were checking in we got the usual spiel about resort phone charges (anything off-island is billed at long distance charges +50%!!!!). I mentioned that we were VERY familiar with those charges, because DH has to use dial-up to access his work email and there is no number available on HHI. :sad2: The CM at the front desk said that they WILL be getting wireless at some point, but they did not know when. This was confirmed by another CM later in the week.

But for now, it's dial-up or find a wi-fi hotspot. We use AOL (you can get a disk for 90 days free -- just use it as your ISP and then cancel when you leave).

But don't be suprised if you don't want to spend a whole lot of time online while you're at HH. Relaxing (without the Internet!) is so much better... :cloud9:

We ate at The Lady & Sons in 2005. We were fortunate that we had a group large enough for a reservation. (I think you need 10+?) IMHO, it's a been there, done that. I'm glad I went but I don't think I'll be returning any time soon. It's definitely very Southern-style food (and I live in Atlanta!), but just not "my" style, LOL! But, I think if you can get in without having to wait all day in line, it's worth it, just to do it!

I ate at Lady & Sons in March during a girls long weekend trip to HH. I had never been and love watching her show. It was good and I'm glad we went. Three of us ordered the buffet, but one friend ordered off the menu and loved the crab cakes. I would probably do it again, if I were in Savannah, but I don't think I'd make a special trip from HH just to eat there. There's plenty of good food at HH!

We have eaten at Lady and Sons twice (once in July 2003 at their old location, and then on Easter Sunday this year in their new location). We probably will not do it again. We had a reservation both times (they only take reservations for small parties on certain days, so we were lucky in that regard). We ate the buffet both times that we were there. The buffet was about the same items both times. The items were "OK" but not anything especially fantastic. The fried chicken is good and the blue cheese dressing (homemade) is especially good, but frankly the rest of the food was not particularly memorable (and is fairly pricey--it was $95 for the three of us on Easter Sunday). The atmosphere is good, and it is something neat to do, but I think we will probably skip it the next time we go to Savannah (which we will definitely do). The comparison I would make is to Cinderella's Royal Table breakfast at MK--it is worth doing and a great experience, but there is a "been there, done that" feeling to it. On the other hand, it might be a possibility to go at a time that we can order off the menu. Perhaps that would be a different experience.

whenever we drive to wdw (2-3x year) we ALWAYS stop in Savannah & eat at The Lady & Sons. We usually stop on the way home, too. We love it & will continue going.

We love The Lady & Sons and go at least twice a year. She never fails to disappoint. Be sure to ask your waiter/waitress if any of the Deens are there are when they are expected. They are as warm and friendly as they appear on TV and are always kind to meet and greet.

I love the fried green tomatoes and the fried chicken. Also her chicken salad is wonderful as are the crab cakes. We never eat off the buffet only order directly from the menu, but have tried so many things and have never been disappointed. :thumbsup2

Enjoy your trip! :)

Thanks for the info. As Doc said, opinions seem to vary on Lady and Sons.

Does Hilton Head have wifi hotspots? Are there Atlanta Bread Companies or similar places around the resort? :beach:

My Husband and I moved to Savannah in March. We have not yet been to the Lady and Sons but the line is always down the sidewalk when we drive by. We figure we will go in January when tourism is down!

My husband was behind Paula Dean in the grocery store a few weeks ago. He said she could not get through the store with so many people approaching her for autographs and pictures. He ended up behind her checking out and they had a chat, probably because he was the only person in Publix that left her alone!

I'm pretty sure there is an Atlanta Bread Company (or Panera Bread) on the main road coming in to the resort. There is also a Starbucks which might have access. I haven't tried to access when I'm at HH, but probably will in the future.

Mellow Mushroom pizza also has free wi-fi. It's located right outside the Sea Pines circle next to Harris Teeter. Plus, really great calzones there! :sunny:
