We had to cancel our Jan trip to SSR because of snow make up days so now we have 160 points we have to use by March 31st '09. I have reserved a few days at Hilton Head in late Feb, the only time we can go. We have never been to HHI, but it is in driving distance (about 5 hours). My DD16, and DH, really want to fly to Disney (there seems to be availability at SSR) even if its just for the weekend, which I understand, but I'm wondering if HHI might be more fun than they think. I really could go either way, but we are going to disney in April, so I though HHI might be something different. Any ideas would be welcome.

I love Hilton Head and would go often if I had more points and time. That being said, we go when the weather is warm and we use it as a relaxing trip. No pressure, no stress. If you are looking for excitement, my personal opinion is that in late February you might be disappointed. You would be pretty lucky for the weather to be warm enough for beach time. I guess it's personal preference, but I'd probably go to WDW that time of the year if I had points to burn.

I love HHI. But it's Febuary and that's not at all prime season. You do run a big risk that it will be cold. For a 16 year old it might be boring....

We were just there with the coldest temperatures in 15 years. It was about 20 degrees on the first night. We were on the 1st floor of the building. The tile floors were ice cold. We put pool towels down as bath mats.

Being a Southerner, I doubt that it will get that cold again this winter. Generally, it only gets miserably cold once a winter if that in the deep South.

While there, we saw people in the pools and the hot tub. A lot of steam was coming off of the hot tub. People were also riding bicycles. It got a little warmer before we left and we went to Savannah, went on a beach combing excursion, a marsh excursion, and also enjoyed ghost stories, a magic show, and playing pool in Big Murgie's Den.

We also really enjoyed our trip in November of 2006. The weather was cool, but not cold. The oak trees, etc. really makes HHI cozy in cool weather.

Overall, we still had fun at 45 degrees, but not at 25 degrees, and your chances of it going back to 25 degrees in late February is next to nil. You may be more hearty than us if you are 5 hours north of HHI.

Plus, no guarantees, but...the weather can be very pretty in late February in the South. There is a chance that it will be 70+ degrees, with blue skies and a light breeze.

Good luck!

OP here - Thank you for your comments. We've decided to go to SSR instead - I think its kind of crazy for the few days that we have, but as DD analyzed - a 1.5 hour flight and 2 hours waiting at the airport is still shorter than the 5 hours driving to Hilton Head- and , thank god for SW Air -we still have $ from our cancelled trip last month. I can't imagine using another airline.

I've been there the 3rd week of Feb. Although the pool was heated-I didn't swim in it all week. If I remember correctly the days were like 60ish in temp. I'm not sure if I wore shorts at all that week. We didn't have any rain and it was very sunny. It was a very quiet low key week. Many of the restaurants weren't open or had limited hours/days of the weeks they were open. It was just me, my parents, and my son who was 11 months old at the time-we went on bike rides and walked shops. The island was very quiet. We went down to Savannah one day and did the trolley tour.

If I had the choice between HHI and SSR-and could swing the trip to FL-I'd go to SSR at that time of the year.
