HHI folk...Kingfisher or Old Oyster factory?

We haven't been to both resturants, so we couldn't tell you. But part of your decision may be when you're going and how far you're willing to drive (if at all). The Kingfisher is so close, you can easily walk there (isn't it right next to the resort?). It's also not as crowded as the Old Oyster Factory, at least from our experience. However, we ate there once and were unimpressed. We've never been to Old Oyster Factory, but looking across the marsh, it always seems very crowded, and we go to HHI off-season.

I prefer Kingfisher myself. IMO Old Oyster Factory is more "upscale" than Kingfisher. I really like the Shrimp and Grits at Kingfisher.

going in 3rd week of june...can you see Old Oyster Factory from the resort

You might could with binoculars. It is a pretty far distance across the waterway. I seem to remember from Old Oyster we could see the red roof of the lodge.

I would choose OOF as I feel it's a better restaurant with better food. But both are good options with decent discounts. With OOF we used the free salad coupon AND the 10% off together several times. We asked, expected to be told one or the other, but on 3 occasions were allowed to use both. Kingfisher has some good early bird specials, I think OOF only has early birds off season.

You can see OOF from the resort I believe it is the only other red roof building you can see.

I haven't tried OOF, but I must say we had a memorable meal at Kingfisher. The food was decent not fabulous- but pretty good. Very reasonable with the early bird. But the best part was a funny magician who came around table to table and amazed our 4 year old. He was completely delighted and spent the remainder f our meal trying to make our ketchup bottle disappear the way the magician had.

LOL-that's why we have no trouble. We always bring our binocculars. Doesn't everyone?:rotfl2:
Old Oyster Factory does seem very popular.

I can do you one better at OOF. A few years ago we had a show the entire dinner where someone backed a boat trailer adjacent and then couldn't get it out. When the tide came it, it flooded and floated the SUV. I felt bad for them in a way but it was still funny none the less seeing them be so animated.

wow- dinner and a show :lmao:

Kingfisher for Happy Hour. Peel and Eat Shrimp and Crab legs really reasonable, and house wine was Buy Obe get one free. Specials were decently priced.
OOF was really good. Got an Oyster appetizer, 6 rockefeller and 6 Savannah, kids even tried and liked, other food was good as well.

Both were worth the price, If I had to pick I'd probably go OOF. Could be the memory...quick story I dropped my family off at the door as it was a bit chilly and the 3 year old was sleepy. They left my 10 year old in the 3rd row of our Rendezvous as it is a little bit of a pain to flip the seat, impossible from the third row. Everyone else piled out at the door and I went and parked the car. As we were seated inside I looked around and realized I had left poor Matt in the car. When I had gotten out of the car and closed my door he figured I was coming around to get him, as I had done a million times before. So, OOF.

I guess my problem with OOF is the menu. I like fried Calabash type seafood. I'm not wild on fish, but love shrimp, scallops and oysters. The times we've been to OOF, it just seems to me that there is a lot of fish on the menu and the prices seem high to me as compared to Kingfisher and even Hudsons. I guess it all comes down to what kind of dining experience you want. On the other hand, the best seafood meal we had last year at HH, wasn't even from a restaurant. It was when we boiled some shrimp one night in our unit. And then the next day we had leftover shrimp cocktail for lunch sitting out on the beach :cool1:.

I'd vote for Kingfisher between those two. OOF is fine, but is very busy in season and even with the early dining special in the winter months was nothing special to us. We'd prefer Red Fish or Alexanders to OOF (all are owned by the same company). Kingfishers is about 50 yards from the HH resort and has an OK early dining special with entertainment most nights (magician, band, etc). Red Fish is about 2 miles away (closer than OOF) and Alexanders is on the way to the Beach House and both have nice early dining specials too.

I don't have a vote for either one, but if you are looking for amazing food in a casual area (maybe too casual for some people) there is a place called the Sea Shack just outside of the Sea Pines area at HH.

Rachel Ray has been there when she was doing the $? a day show. I went with 2 friends during an all girls weekend. Great fresh food, reasonable prices, it was a little crowded at dinner, very casual/ diner like, and you can take your meal outside to a picnic table if you like.

There are also great, reasonable places to eat at Harbortown. Salty Dog and another sit down restaurant (not sure of the name but it is right beside the lighthouse-- go to the lighthouse too). These all would require a car but are well worth the drive.

Hope this helps.

My vote is for the Old Oyster Factory. We had absolutely fabulous food there, including the appetizer and dessert. Also, we were seated by the window with a great water view. I was so disappointed in the Kingfisher. Not only was it the worst food I had in Hilton Head, it was the worst meal of our entire 2 week trip. Yes, it was an easy walk from our room, but I would have rather ate elsewhere.
