Hi,

We have reservations for HHI for the 2nd week of May. I was reading on another site that there is a chance of 'no-see-umms' (bugs) being around that time of year.

Can anyone comment on if this is a problem? Have you been there during this time of year and not been able to do things outside becuase bugs were all over the place...

We've been in New England during 'black fly season' and it really ruined our vacation since we love to be outdoors. They were all over the place and almost swarmed you when you got out of your car or room.

We're excited to be visiting HHI, but real concerned about these bugs!

Thanks for your help!

I can't speak for HH but we went to VB 4 times-3 times we never saw a bug, last time we had a lot of trouble with noseeums. We have been in March and May and they were not a problem.

Just take some OFF-. We were hesitant because of the DEET in OFF but a lot of people said it is the only thing that works for noseeums.

Noseeums would not ruin your vacation-they are mostly a problem at sunrise and sunset, if at all.

Maybe someone can confirm this but I think they are more of a problem in FL than SC.

Don't worry about them and enjoy your vacation.

Noseeums can definitely be a problem at HH. I'm lucky enough to be one of those who doesn't seem to attract them, but DH and DD are not as fortunate.

The previous post was correct -- sunrise and sunset are the worst times; either stay indoors or wear long sleeves, long pants at those times. OFF is another excellent choice, and you might want to try citronella if you're planning on sitting on your porch.

Irritating? Yes. Enough to ruin your vacation? Hasn't been the case for us so far. We had a MUCH worse experience with love bugs at Vero! EEEWWWW!!!

I was at HHI first week of may last year. Although I was not out much during the early morning, the Noseums were very bad on the morning I went to play golf (I played at Sea Pines). I was getting eaten alive by the little buggers. I walked into the pro shop and they sold me a little bug repelant cloth (single use). It worked great and I had no further problems. Other than that one bad experience, they were not bad during the balance of our trip and we did spend a bunch of time outside: Dolphin cruise, Big Dipper Pool at HHI, Beach House, Miniature Golf, Outlet Shopping, Campfire at the HHI. It was a great trip. Enjoy...just bring some bug repelent.
