I am trying to plan a get away for Thanksgiving. Our kids are in college and will probably be home for only a day. I don't even know if there are rooms available, but what is HH like during this time? Cold? Anything stores open? Can we kayak? It will be a 12 hour drive and just the two of us. We looked at WDW but would have to go on a wait list to get the dates we want plus airfare is high. We are open for any other nonDVC suggestions also. We live in central PA.

Thanks!
Karen

HHI and Thanksgiving-I'm your Diser! We're planning our 6th consecutive Thanksgiving at HHI in a couple months. Another DISer (Kewz) is about 5 years more than that.
Rooms available? I'd be surprised for 2011. We recently did an add-on to insure we could reserve at 11 months for Thanksgiving there. Seven months is questionable, at least for non-2BR villas. Weather? We've gone when it's been literally freezing, icy on Thanksgiving day, and other years have been hot tub weather-mid 80s. Most years are fine for kayaking. Here's an idea of the difference in weather from 2 different years. Note the gloves and note that we'e hot tub wimps-it has to be over 80 degrees out before we'll go near it.

I forgot to mention in my other reply, feel free to ask any more ??s about HHI and Thanksgiving. And yes, everywhere's open around that time, that we've found anyways.

We were there last year. Sunday before T'giving until Saturday after. Every day was in the mid 80's until the day we left when the temp dropped a lot. The resort was full, but it didn't seem crowded. It was my first time to visit during the fall (usually go in summer) and I loved it! I have been to WDW several times during T'giving, and I much prefer Hilton Head. Like Simba's Mom said, I doubt there is much available for this year at T'giving, but you should at least call and see. Good luck!

Hey, Candace, how come we didn't meet? Hope I didn't bump into you-literally. I tend to be looking up, using my binocculars all the time there. The weather was by far the warmest Thanksgiving I've ever encountered there. We also went to WDW one Thanksgiving (the year before we discovered HHI) and also prefer HHI.

HI! :wave2:

We love HHI at Thanksgiving. This will be our 10th year. If you can get a room grab it!

One year we even went so far as to threaten to drag a mattress out and sleep in the front park-like area when they told us they were sold out. But I think that only worked for us because we were already there, had reservations up until a couple days before our plane left, then our reservations were inexplicably cancelled for those last couple days.

Wow! Ten years, Kewz1. That's super! Goes to show how addictive Thanksgiving at HHI can be.

Wow! Your reservations were cancelled? Was it a mistake with Member Services?

Well, they never admitted it, but they said they'd check the phone records on the call I made to make the reservation. Then when they called back a couple hours later, suddenly they were SUPER-nice, put us in direct contact with the front desk manager at HHI, who assured us that she'd personnally handle it, they moved our luggage whenever we had to move. Truthfully, I think that if they'd admitted that the mistake was theirs I would have gone balistic, so let's just call it "the year we took the grand tour of 4 different villas at HHI".
