November 1-2: Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance, one of the nation’s signature automobile events, will include major international names in automotive collecting and racing when the event returns for its 13th annual celebration. November 1: Great Performances Series at the Arts Center, presents Ben Vereen! Actor, singer and dancer, Vereen’s legendary performances transcend time. November 1: Got Art! The Art League’s largest fundraiser of the year is here again, offering you, an unbelievable value for your support of our community’s visual arts! November 1-November 30: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host the 15 artists of the Maye River Gallery in Bluffton with their “Hands Across the Bridge”. The artists will meet and greet residents and visitors alike and share some of their insights in a series of artist’s demonstrations during their exhibit at the Museum. Demonstrations dates and times may be found on the Museum’s website, coastaldiscovery.org.

Hands Across the Bridge features work by the artists in media ranging from textiles to artglass, photography to basketry, 3D assemblage to collage, clay to sterling, and printmaking to painting in watercolor, pastels and oils. At the gallery entrance, visitors will see a display of photos of the artists’ hands as they create their art.

The roll call of artists contains a number of well-known names in the local art world, among them several art instructors and many award winners. The variety and quality of their work is stunning. Among the painters who share their talent in various mediums are: • Joyce Nagel, Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America • Mary Grayson Segars, alla prima oil paintings • Audrey Montgomery, highly detailed watercolors • Anne Hakala, abstract mixed media • Judy Saylor McElynn, evocative oils • Kathy Tortorella, bold pastels and oil • Earline Allen turns clay into imaginative pottery • Donna Ireton creates unique pine straw baskets • Jo Dye works in fine detail with paper collage • Paulette Bennett creates glittering jewelry with her hand-made glass beads • Susan Knight works jewelry magic with sterling silver • Carrol Kay weaves fibers into colorful wraps and accessories • Barbara Snow includes printmaking along with her oil and pastel paintings • Marci Tressel captures the Lowcountry in haunting black and white photography • Caroll Williams creates imaginative art from ‘found’ materials

The Hilton Head Regional Healthcare Temporary Exhibit Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Museum is located at 70 Honey Horn Drive on Hilton Head Island.

Tuesdays: The Coastal Discovery Museum Marine Science Expedition. The 2-hour expedition aboard research vessel SPARTINA with Marine Biologist Amber Kuehn will run from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The participants will observe science in nature under microscope and display live organisms. The Captain will have living specimens on board of common fish, crabs, shrimp, etc. that can be found in the water. Participants will learn interesting and intricate facts about the biology of the Lowcountry waterway. A scientific explanation will accompany a trip through the marsh. From microscopic animals to dolphins, the possibilities are endless. Cost is $35 adult and $25 child (12 and under). Space is limited and reservations are required. November 6-8: 15th Special Olympics North America Tennis Championship presented by Professional Tennis Registry, Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club, 116 Shipyard Dr. 126 Special Olympics Athletes from Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Illinois and South Carolina will compete in a three day event featuring several levels of competition. Thursday, 12–5 p.m. – Divisioning (Levels 1-5). Friday, 7:45 a.m. – Singles Competition (Levels 2, 4, 5). Saturday, 8 a.m. – Singles (Level 1) and Doubles Competition. specialolympics.org.

November 6-9: Hilton Head Preparatory School performing arts department presents “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” led by Peggy Trecker White. “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” a quintessential tap show that was a long-running Broadway hit and Tony-award winner. Set in the roaring 20s, the story follows a girl named Millie from Kansas who moves to New York City to marry a wealthy man. Instead, she experiences the “thoroughly modern” flapper life, makes some fascinating friends and finds unexpected romance along the way. November 8-9: 13th Annual South Carolina Bank and Trust Hilton Head Oyster Festival in Shelter Cove Community Park. November 9: The Literacy Center special Jazz Brunch to benefit adult literacy needs in our local area at The Jazz Corner. Guests will be treated to a delicious gourmet brunch while listening to the sounds of the renowned Jazz Corner Quartet. Tickets are $65. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. For 40 years, The Literacy Center has equipped adults in Beaufort County with the reading, writing, math and speaking skills they need to build self-reliance and success at home, in the workplace and in our community. The Literacy Center is Beaufort County’s only nonprofit adult literacy organization, serving 600 students a year. November 11: Learn to throw a cast net at The Coastal Discovery Museum. Classes will be held at 3 p.m. at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. This hands-on program will show you the best way to learn to ‘open that net’ on every cast. Presented by Scott Moody, a local angler, that grew up primarily with salt water fishing and diving. Moody will share his experiences with others to help grow the sport of fishing in this class. Beginners are welcome, and you may bring your own net, or a loaner will be made available to you. Thursdays 11/13: The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society is conducting guided walks of the Audubon Newhall Preserve, 55 Palmetto Bay Rd., at 10 a.m., September, October, and November. Experienced naturalists will discuss the history and wildlife found in the 50 acre preserve. The walks are free to the public but donations are appreciated. Reservations are not required. November 14-16: David M. Carmines Memorial Team Tennis Championship, Presented by David M. Carmines Foundation and Island Rec Center, benefiting the David M. Carmines Foundation. November 14-16: Hilton Head Dance Theatre kicks off the Island’s Holiday season with its annual production of “The Nutcracker.” With a storyline based on a tale by E.T.A. November 15: Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island’s Dance for the Kids! Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island’s premier fundraising event, Dance for the Kids, will be held at the Hilton Head Island Westin Resort & Spa, from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Dance for the Kids will feature the music of Hilton Head’s own Lavon Stevens Band featuring vocalist Louise Spencer. A cocktail reception will be followed by a seated dinner with wine, fabulous silent and live auctions, music and dancing. November 16: The Outside Foundation will be hosting Broad Creek Clean-Up! November 11-December 6: The Art League of Hilton Head presents Linear Lietmotif, a lively Pop Art exhibition, featuring work by sculptor Mark Larkin and painter Ted Jordan. Hey, Doc-you missed the "big one"-the Thanksgiving morning Turkey Trot run, 5K and 10K, with FREE beer afterwards. Since you first posted it about 5 years ago, it's a tradition for DH. Used to be the Piggly Wiggly Turkey Trot, but now just the Turkey Trot run by the Island Rec Center. Had to put my plug in because, although DH has always done the 5K, this year he's doing the 10K. That way he can eat more for Thanksgiving!
