Hi,

We will be heading to HH the beginning of December for a few nights :yay:

Anyone have any suggestions for dining spots for dinner?

Groceries .. What store to you recommend to avoid the "tourist markup"?

I seen to recall reading some posts in the past about a weekly dinner that a chef held at the beach house .. something about crab cakes always on the menu ..(I'm getting older...my memory is fading! :sad2: ) Does anyone know if this dinner is still held and how to reserve?

Thanks!

We'll miss you by a week or two. We leave for home November 27. There's no dinner at the Beach House. There used to be a "Pivate Affair" you could reserve, but no more. Do you want dressy? Casual? Seafood? Expensive? Old Fort Pub is supposed to be one of the nicest, but kind of expensive. For casual seafood, there's Captain Woody's, Salty Dog Cafe, Sea Shack (VERY casual). For groceries, Piggly Wiggly is the most convenient and doesn't seem any more expensive than anywhere else. Is this your first HHI trip? Hope you enjoy it.

the sea shack's former chef has moved on to start his own restaurant: roastfish and cornbread. i'm a big fan.

i also enjoyed frankie bones and the skullcreek boathouse which are part of the serg group.

the sushi at hinoki of kurama and the thai at ruan thai were also really good. (both of the ethnic places might be a little more formal at night...not sure.)

the front desk at the resort should have a restaurant mazagine that will have more options and some maps that may be helpful (but roastfish and cornbread was not in the magazine when i went in september, so don't limit yourself to those.)

be aware that getting around hilton head is an adventure (especially at night) due to limited signage and lighting restrictions, so leave a little extra time for finding places...

(you might also do some searches here and on TUG for hilton head dining, as you will find more suggestions.)

I like to get groceries at Bi-Lo on HHI. I applied for their loyalty card online and keep the card with my vacation purse, as we do not have a Bi-Lo at home.

Take your Sam's Club card, if you are already a member and buying in bulk.

There is a Fresh Market that a friend told me is very nice.

Piggly Wiggly at Coligny Plaza is not somewhere I will shop again.

We found a good restaurant in Bluffton- Montana's on restaurant.com

You can sign up for emails from Captain Woody's.

We like The Upper Crust for pizza, just before going over the bridge and Mellow Mushroom on HHI- love their hot pretzels.

Since we're Sam's members, Bi-Lo sounds good. Where on the island is it? And good to hear about Roastfish and Cornbread. Off to Captain Woody's website for the coupon!

We enjoyed the Kingfisher restaurant. It is right near the entrance to Disney's resort.

Thanks everyone!

We haven't been to HH since 1998 ..so we really don't have any current reference for dining.

We like all types of food .. we will not be bringing a suit for DH, but we are bringing country club casual clothing.

Thanks for the heads up for coupons.

I like the name roastfish and cornbread .. we'll have to give this place a try!

We had a Sams club card, but didn't renew it .. we find we frequent Costco and BJ's more and having 3 warehouse memberships was getting to be a bit much ..

Thanks again!

Sorry, I misunderstood. I read too fast, and I thought you needed a Sam's club card at Bi-Lo. We've been going to HHI since 2003, and unfortunately, there are lots of resturaunt changes, you may notice a few, especially not having been since 1998.

I have been thinking about HHI all day. I just want to o back to San Miguel's http://www.sanmiguels.com/ right now. It's right across the harbor from DVC HH. My son and I love going over and having chips and salsa and watch the boats come in.

I live fairly close to HH so I have been there several times. Some of my personal favorites are Sea shack (hidden and its a shack), Marley's (off the traffic circle, going towards Sea pines), Hudson's, and the boathouse II(both off Pope), I also really like the Market Street cafe in coligny for a great lunch-mainly sandwiches and pizza but always really good. I would highly suggest to avoid the old oyster factory and crab shack's, both are very touristy and not very good. Kingfisher has been hit or miss for me. Also if you like Italian, Guiseppe's is very good and cheap by HH standards. Also since you are so close to Savannah you should try Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. it's only open M-F from 11-2 (not 100% on the hours), it's family style southern food; and well worth any wait, but it's cash only, I think it's still $15/person. Hope you have a wonderful trip!

We just returned from a 2 nite stay at HH in Oct. We ate at the Sea Shack and thought it was very good. Very fresh fish. We ate the next night at Roastfish and Cornbread. I was not too happy with it. It could have been the service. We sat outside and our server kept complaining to us about everyone she was serving. She felt the little boy at the next table was not behaved and every one wanted something from her. It was strange. My food was cold when it came out. I did get a new meal. Overall it just was not a great meal.
Try the Pink Flamingo for donuts. They are fantastic.

Taking notes! Our first stay is next May, over Memorial Day weekend and that following week. Will there be special holiday dining going on then?

Not sure what your reference to a "Private Affair is.

As of the first two weeks in October There is a Tuesday Night Low Country Boil at the Beach House with entertainment. Price is $24.95 for adults and $9.99 for kids.

We ate at Sea Shack and then Steamers, both were good. The former had very fresh food and should not be missed (defeintely dress down for this one). The latter was good and had a good menu selection but nothing that jumped out at me. The former I would for sure go back, the latter I would try again.

The OP asked about a dinner at the Beach House with a chef. There used to be an activity offered where you could reserve the Beach House for a private dinner with Gordon, who now works in the General Store (but I still think of him as "Chef Gordon"). He'd discuss the menu with you beforehand and it was fantastic. Sadly that ended around the spring of 2005, but not before DH and I were fortunate enough to do it for his birthday. The name of the event was a "Private Affair".

Sorry to disagree with a neighbors, but skip Kingfishers. The joint across from Kingfishers is better, though we haven't been back to either since our first trip.

For pizza, we like NYC Pizza. Its a little hole in the wall. head down to the traffic circle (and enter at 6o'clock, and go around to 9'o'clock. It will be a couple of blocks up on the left. Its next to the kickin gator surf shop, where I get a tshirt everytime.

We like Salty Dog, any of them will do. The Wreck of the Salty Dog usually has a shorter wait. But we prefer to eat on the boardwalk for lunch.

The Crazy Crab in Harbourtown is also good.

Stickey Fingers is one of our must do's. 3o'clock on the traffic circle, up ahead on the right.

Now here's the best secret place.....come closer, we dont want anyone to hear.....closer......Flamingo Donuts. Oh my gosh... to die for. Its worth everyone getting up and going to eat them there fresh and hot. Traffic circle, 12 oclock turn left before the gate. Its on the far side of the shopping center. Remember, this ones a secret.

I agree on Piggly Wiggly. Convenient and not pricey. My coffee mug always make me smile.

Don't worry, Flamingo Donuts will be our little secret
;) Can't wait to try them when we go Thanksgiving Week. Sounds like a good breakfast.

I also recommend Piggly Wiggly at Shelter Cove. It is very close to the resort.

For groceries we'd shop at Fresh Market anytime-great selection. We did not care for Piggly Wiggly. Fresh Market was very close (quick bike ride or car ride). CMs will be able to direct you to either market you choose with a local map of area. Both are only a few minutes from HH.

We went to HHI in May and had a great trip.

We loved Stacks for breakfast and went there twice. I had the creme brulee french toast one day and the bananas foster french toast the second time and they were both delicious. I did prefer the creme brulee one more if you only get there once.

We also had breakfast at Signe's Bakery, which was on Rachel Ray's $40 a day episode like the Sea Shack. I ordered the deep dish french toast trio and was very pleased. We also got desserts to go. The key lime bread pudding, and butter pecan bread pudding heated up nicely in the hote microwave and were super tasty. The pink lemonade cake was excellent :lovestruc

For lunch/dinner we hit up Wild Wings Cafe twice. My husband was a fan of the steel town spuds. Kind of a sports bar atmosphere, but pretty good food.

We LOVED Wise Guys, which is owned by the SERG group that owns Frankie Bones and Guiseppe's. The BBQ chicken flatbread was to die for :cloud9:

Have a great trip!

I am not a fan of the Piggly Wiggly either. And, I agree about Fresh Market. There is a Harris Teeter down near Sea Pines Circle. It is a full-service grocery with nice meats and vegetables and used by locals. There is also a Publix in that area that is nice, but more touristy.
