We're thinking of trying for a 1 BR at HH for the end of May/beginning of June '04. Anyone have an idea of how easy or hard this resort is to get into at 7 months?

We'll be going with 9 y/o ds. What activities have your children his age enjoyed?

Thanks for the help!

Since those dates are approaching the beginning of summer, which is the prime season sor HH, I would call exactly at 7 months to try to get in. Also, if you can be flexible with your dates, it helps. Good luck!

We're very flexible on the dates. DS gets out of school for the summer around Memorial Day, and we can go at any point after that. I just figured that there would be less of a demand at the end of May/beginning of June, because schools in the North should still be in session. Do you think it's necessary to call for each day, or can we just call for the 5 days at once?

Why are the weekend points SO MUCH more??? Are there more activities on the weekends? It seems much worse than the WDW DVCs. We think that we'll probably just pay cash for Fri/Sat night.

You will need to call day by day to reserve and even then anything other than a 2 BR will be difficult. If you call day by day you should have a chance though. That may also be a good time to try for an exchange for one of the Marriott properties in HH, esp for a backup plan.

If you are flexible you do not have to call day to day. I made 7 month reservations last year for peak season Sun-thurs starting July 11. I know it is harder for the 1bdroom, but if you are flexible on dates, you should be fine right at the 7 month mark. I have been a DVC member since 1994 and have never done day to day reservations for any resort(including BWV which seems to be the culprit). I think that it is not necessary to tie up MS with all these daily calls. Ask them on the first day you can call what the availability is like and they can tell you if you can wait for your whole reservation or if it is already very booked.
PS you will love HHI..we did after 5 trips we just added on points there in 2002.

I will have to respectfully disagree about calling day-to-day, unless you're willing to take a 2BR.

Hilton Head is now sold out and is filled to capacity earlier and earlier each year. There are relatively few 1BR units and they do tend to go the fastest. There is no way that Member Services can predict if you will be able to get all five nights if you wait till the end. I think they'd rather get daily phone calls from a member than have an irate member calling because they didn't get what they wanted. (Not that any of US would ever do that...)

The reason for the high points on the weekends is because Hilton Head is a very popular place for weekend trips for people all over the Southeast. If the points were lower, the weekends would all be grabbed up and it would be nearly impossible to get 7 consecutive days!

But just remember -- a week in the summer will be the same number of points no matter how they're divided up. If the weekend points were lowered, the weekday points would have to be raised accordingly! ;)

When I talked to MS today, just out of curiosity, I asked if there are any HH studios available next week. The CM laughed and said "are you kidding". She would check all other resorts, only when I asked about HH, she told me it would be impossible (she did not even bother looking), HH is the smallest resort of all. She was very very nice and told me that I would have no chance.

Wow, I never thought it would be this hard. I will call in mid September on the very first date to make my ressie for next year for our 1-br.

Thanks for all of your thoughts and advice. I think that I'll call in day by day, just to try to have the best chance in getting a reservation. Guess we're not the only ones who'd like to try for HH in the summer :p .

Dean - Thanks for the suggestion about trading for a Marriott. I'd really rather stay at DVC (brand loyalty ;) ), but I may check out Marriott.

I guess the fact that it's so popular is a good sign. I'm really starting to get excited about this trip. We're planning on adding more points next spring. Now I'm thinking maybe we should wait until after we visit HH...

Part of the reason for the challenge of studios and 1BR villas at HH in the summer is that there are a total of 21 of each at the resort. They do go quickly!

You may need to call early and call often! ;)

Enjoy!
