HGTV Dream Home

I had sent an email to HGTV the theme of it being that while the homes they "give away" are lovely the regular average citizen can't afford to take claim of them.
How about building a nice home with energy saving materials and nice surroundings for a more realistic value that the winner could keep when they won! I will be interested to see if they write back.

I no longer enter the contests because I could never afford to keep the house they showcase and it would just depress the heck out of me to have to give it up if I won!

Only if they have another house in Maine by the ocean would I enter because I would sell my family to be able to keep that one!:rotfl:

I have always entered the contest with the idea of selling. The taxes both Fed,state, and local would be tremendous. I figure 2.5 million(prize worth) with 2/3's out for taxes and .06% for a realtor:
2.500000 -1.650000(2/3s) = 850000-51000(realtor's 6%)= 799,000 profit
I'm not even tempted to go to Colorado to see the house.

If we won the new house we would be keeping it! It has everything we want including ski in ski out. We would move there.

They are still being greedy... that house is not worth nearly that much, and they have been told so by experts! I don't feel sorry for them anymore, they are just digging a hole for themselves:sad2:

My parents looked at the house and were told it was worth about $2.5 million.

Edited - wrong house. My parents looked at the one in NC, not Texas. I believe the original winner sold it back to the development. Buy it and live next to a member of the Dave Matthews Band!

If I would win the CO house, which btw, is beautiful....I'd turn it into a bed and breakfast. Sell my present house to pay the taxes and treat the property taxes as my mortgage payments.

I better go enter.

Do you own the land on this one? I know that on some of the other houses the land was leased and you were not able to run a business on the premises.

I'm positive that in this exclusive, gated community, a bed and breakfast would not be an option. I'm sure they'd not allow that - or renting. :sad1:

That's what I thought too. I think HGTV needs to rethink this "great" contest!! :rolleyes1

oh come on....don't take away my dreams so suddenly. Ok....I'd move in my entire family and charge them rent under the table ;)

We enter this contest every year and were able to tour the Tyler, TX dream home. It was gorgeous - but not 4.9 million gorgeous!

I would love to win this year's home but like most others, we realistically could not afford to keep it. We would sell it and enjoy the after tax profit -which wouldn't be all that bad :)

You could live with your entire family and still call it a "Dream Home?" :rotfl2:
