HFCS Why?

Nature's Own bread is also HFCS free :thumbsup2 . Annie's makes a good organic ketchup, as well as macaroni and cheese. We have been HFCS free for awhile. It's great and becoming much easier.

Don't even get me started on PHO's. :headache:

I'm going to have to read up on this. I'd not heard this before, I thought it was just another form of sugar. What about things like just fructose or just corn syrup? Are those just as bad too or is it just the HFCS? :confused3

Becka, you should write to Trader Joe's to suggest opening a store in Columbia. I bet they would do really well there. I don't know what's there now, but the only place I would shop when I lived there was Schnucks and it was expensive.

I have been surprised that Trader Joe's is not here. I keep expecting them to show up because like you I think one could be supported here. Ironically enough Schnucks is not the best place to shop for DS and it is $$$. I have found that the Hy-vee that opened here about 2 years ago has the best "organic" market section so I almost always shop there but it is on the other side of town from where we live so it is a pain.

I'm trying to eliminate HFCS too, because I'm trying to lose wieght and just eat/cook healthier in general and you guys are right! It IS in everything!

I'm trying to buy only whole grains, and eliminate hfcs and it's like searching for the holy grail. Especially because we live in a rural area- organics are still newfangled at my local store. And soooo expensive. Why are they so expensive if they are less processed and don't require chemicals/pesticides?!

I'm wondering when we'll see the government finally step up and support organic farmers and try to help people out who just want to feed their family healthy foods without breaking the bank.

Good Morning America (last week) had a segment about corn in general, and of course HFCS with the awful things that it does to our bodies. We have just started really try to buy products without the junk, but jeez it is difficult!!

I live in a VERY small town, and our stores carry Delmonte ketchup. I buy it alot because it is cheaper-good to know it doesn't contain HFCS. I also like the Nature's Own breads. Thanks for this thread-we need to work on this as well.

Fortunately, I'm going through most of my food and am not finding much HFCS. It's in the obvious things like pop tarts and hershey's syrup, but I already knew those were bad for us. And I did just do some shopping at Trader Joes, so most of my food right now is from there. I usually only go there about once a month since it's 15 minutes away. But I do love shopping there.

Just to let anyone with kids know- Newmans makes wheat and dairy free oreo like cookies. They are great and no HFCS!

Just back from shopping and was pleasantly surprised. I was able to find Vermont's own white bread (I am hoping the kids will like it- then I'll switch them to the wheat) I got the Arnolds Healthy grain bread (HFCS free) found the Heinz organic Ketchup, and even got my own Organic Blue Agave- for the banana stuff that somebody posted last week- an ice cream substitute kind of thing made out of bananas.
So I took the first step. It was easier and MORE EXPENSIVE than I thought but let's hope it sticks. I was surprised to find that I was able to find juice boxes without it. They were 100% juice Capri suns.(yeah they have sugar but the kids have to have some no?)

We are about 95% HFCS free in our house now (hard to find a few things in our area), and it has made a amazing difference. All our clothes fit better, and DH's cholesterol dropped 40 points in 6 months.

I have had a hard time getting it out of our diet all together as well. My DH likes Coke so I'll let him have it. I have found some kosher foods to be very good about not having HFCS in it. I do prefer sodas that have sugar and not HFCS as well. I wound up making my own bread since the good breads that don't use it to sweeten cost so dang much.

I'll have to try the Del Monte ketchup. I don't recall if I have seen it or not. I've been looking for organic, but haven't had much luck and I am super picky on my ketchup :teeth:

I do a lot more from scratch so I can use real sugar. I also am able to cut down on sodium because of it as well.

I wish HFCS weren't so cheap. That is the only reason why it was used to replace sugar in the first place.

I was kind of chuckling to myself, too, because- while reading this thread and thinking about hfcs and trying to remove it from our pantry, I am downing my 3rd Coke of the day. :guilty:

I'm thinking HFCS IS addictive... I gotta have my coke!

you have to be careful with labels, ,if it says NO --- better go read the ingredients -- some products have it in there when is says it does not. It is all about reading label/ingredients

Definitely a good idea to always read the ingredients - even when shopping at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. So far, I've only found one item at Whole Foods that had HFCS (frozen corn dogs...it was pretty far down on the ingredients list, but I still passed on it). But I also found recently that there are more things at Trader Joe's that have either HFCS or PHVO in some form. :sad2: So keep reading those labels!

Has he tried Coke Zero? I'm a big coke fan and do not like diet coke one iota. But I do love Coke Zero. Now they have Cherry Coke Zero which is even better. :thumbsup2

just a note that since passover is rolling around that there will be a lot of items without corn in them since corn is not allowed for passover.

Me too, trying to eliminate it from my diet. I have watched Dr. Oz on Oprah, and don't have his book handy. But I think it's according to him that it prevents you from filling full, and causes craving for more; somehow it inteferes your body's natural controls. It's very hard on your liver. I would love a return to natural sugars in our food. My family used to make a pitcher of koolaid every day when we were kids, and there went a cup of sugar, but we never had a weight problem.

I'll definitely look for Delmonte ketchup!

It's cheap and doesn't need to be imported. We can grow it here in the ol' USA and fatten ourselves up pretty good! HFCS has something in it that the brain does not register that we are full. That way we eat more! I wish companies would eliminate it from their products for good.

I just read a little less than half of that massive thread and think I am going to try this. It's so late, but I've been going out into the kitchen and checking labels. The bread will probably be the hardest to change. I thought I wasn't doing too bad with the Home Pride wheat bread.
