My daughter and I are supposed to fly from Detroit to Orlando tomorrow (Friday) for our last WDW visit before heading back home across the pond....

but it seems there's another big ole storm by the name of ophelia or something ridiculous like that, hovering off the coast of cape canaveral...

do you have any weather reports for us?
are we going to be able to land tomorrow? (our flights due in at noon)...

oh please say that we'll make it...
when at the last minute (yesterday) i decided we were going to take this last WDW fling, i thought about renting a car and driving down but decided it would take too much time (19 hours)....so instead stupidly chose the metal tube in the sky method of getting there...so i already bought the e-tickets....hmmm....

It seems it's in limbo at the moment. We fly out tomorrow too so keeping a check on it. I looked at the Orlando Sentinel for info.

when i called WDW last night to reserve a room, they told me that the disney cruise ship would be leaving from miami instead of port canaveral....not a particularly good sign...
and the CM also said that people had called to cancel their reservations due to worry about the storm.....
i heard a little while ago that the winds are picking up....i suppose they could always land us at an airport somewhere and we could drive the rest of the way....
i'd run out and rent a car now to drive down (we're visiting here and i can't take my mom's car), but i was up all night working and not in any shape to drive for 19 minutes let alone 19 hours.....but maybe i should reconsider the situation........................

the trick is just to get there...once you're there it doesn't matter if it storms or not....it's still WDW......a great place rain or shine.....

Sorry,
been flying around Europe :-)
this is the latest map

thanks Obi!
(but about that flying around and shirking your hurricane duties here on the board..... ;) )..

it looks like it's moving away...let's all keep our fingers crossed....for that matter, may as well cross our toes while we're at it...

oh yes....i've been watching the weather channel here and it's starting to look bad....not so much as a hurricane, but in terms of the possibility that MCO will be affected......i think i've timed our flight perfectly badly.....right smack at the now predicted high wind peak.....
i wonder how much it takes to close MCO....

Many of my guide books say the hurricane season is from June through to the end of September. We have booked from October 12th next year and our friends are telling me the season is longer and they no longer want to come to Vero Beach with us as they think it is more chance a hurricane will hit the beach areas, more likely than central florida.

What is your advice?

Many thanks

Hurricane season is early June to early November. Yes, the beach areas do tend to be harder hit as the winds come in from the sea so I can sympathise with your friends. However, the storms don't appear overnight so you do get plenty of warning.

In reality, they have more chance of being run down crossing the road outside their house than having a hurricane land on them.
the majhority of hurricanes do NOT land on central florida (i.e. the middle to top part of the state) because of the way the water and wind flows run. This latest hurricane is a classic example of that.
You would have a slightly bigger chance of encountering one if you were going to South Carolina.
If you took their way of looking at this ever so slightly risk, then you would never leave your bed! :earsboy:

thanks for your help.

We are quite happy to spend the two weeks at WDW itself so won't to force them to change their minds.

As the season draws to a close do they get less strong?

 mmmm ....... and that's just where I'm heading first week in October. Being caught in Frances last year makes me keen to avoid another one, so there is a 'plan B' just in case ;)

Good luck with your journey Beth - and anyone else who's travelling this season :sunny:
