Is there something going on in the city the week of 10/31/05? I was thinking about making a trip for a couple days, but when I looked at several sites for hotels, the prices were out of this world (for me). Hotels I can usually get for $150-200/night were listing at $350-400/night. What am I missing in my complete cluelessness? :confused3

TIA!

Other than the halloween parade in the village - not sure of anything. Although we'll be in WDW!

Maleficient, the marathon is on November 6 so that is indeed possibly one reason. However, I would think the Halloween Parade is that actual reason hotels are so expensive. It's HUGE and is a big draw for out of towners and residents alike. I think it's the largest of it's kind? Not sure. It is definitely a must-do if over the top costumes and mega partying is your style. The entire area of the lower West Side of Manhattan (Greenwich Village) is one giant party ala mardi gras.

If you were bringing kids, I wouldn't suggest it at all. Some of the costumes are pretty racy. Plus, there are drunk folks galore on the streets. But if it's just adults, you might have fun. Be warned, you really have to be pretty open minded as well. Given the nature of that neighborhood, it's pretty openly gay. Nevertheless, if that type of environment is not your bag, it's super easy to avoid.

Personally, we avoid it big time nowadays because we've been there, done that. If you want to PM me for info, feel free!

Rick, that sounds like something that would be a blast to experience! :teeth: Unfortunately, with hotel prices that high, I think we're going to have to go somewhere else and try for a long weekend in NYC some other time. I've always wanted to see the tree at Rockefeller Center at Christmas...gives me a bit more time to save.

Wow, I miss NYC. I haven't been there since January 1999... *sigh*

That also might be the week of the annual United Nations Convention!!!! No offence to the Halloween parade - but that would not double hotel rooms!!! I beleive the Marathon and the UN convention which happens for 2 weeks in October and puts the city in gridlock!

the marathon and the UN are probably bigger draws for out of towners than the Halloween Parade...I haven't done the parade in many years, but I used to love it.

Well the UN also lifts prices because of the high ranking officials - world press and they need room for security - I work accross from the Waldorf and I just wish they would close down my office that week - its so busy - not to mention - a couple of those days the president is in town. Honestly - do some research - if the UN is that week - chose another week to come to NY - save some $$$ and gridlock in the midtown area.
