He's torturing her cats....serious thread

Oh my. I am not a cat person. I really don't like them. However, in this case for my mother and the cats' sakes I would deal for a few months. This is cruelty and it is so disturbing. Why can't they go to your grandmothers?

Call the police, call the humane society, call animal control - keep on calling until you get someone who is not afraid of cats and will go and take those cats out of that house.

No offense, but if you know he is abusing them and you do nothing but wait until he "sets them free", you are not much better than he is. By letting them go in a park - what does that accomplish? They will get eaten by a dog, run over by a car or starve to death on the street.

Call someone who will get them into a shelter or rescue group. Do the right thing.

ita. i'm such an animal person AND a cat person that this post is really disturbing me and bothering me. i'm not the biggest dog person in the world but if something similar happened with my mother and her dog, you better believe i would take that dog in, no questions asked.

After my own personal tragedy with my cat last Saturday, I do not want to read this entire thread.

However, I would be calling every single authority (police, SPCA, media) until I found someone to help those poor animals.

I ABHOR people who abuse animals. I hope there's a special part of hell just for them.

OMG!!!!! I could not even finish reading the Op's thread. I am livid. REPORT YOUR UNCLE!!!! These poor beloved pets cannot defend themselves and do not deserve to be treated as such.

Definately do something or I feel you are just as responsible.

I hope the cats end up okay. Your uncle is a sick man.

Sorry, I am so angry right now.

At the moment I am kind of glad I don't know who the OP is irl...because not only would I be reporting the brother to the police and animal authorities, but ALSO the OP for KNOWING that this is going on and DOING NOTHING!

Absolutely shameful...you'd rather the brother turn them loose so they might be run over or hurt further, than to have them turned over to animal control where they might stand a chance.

Just imagine how your mother is likely to react when your brother finally tells her that YOU KNEW what he was doing and did nothing. Don't think that this little secret of yours will stay a secret....

This is seriously one of the most mucked up things I've ever read here, and that's saying a lot.

They're cats, not tiny terrorists. You'd rather him put two house pets out then have them live with you until she get's a new home??

How do you think your Mother and Brother will feel when they find out you KNEW what he did to their pets, and did NOTHING?? They've lost everything in a fire, and then they're going to lose their pets too, and you think it's better for them to be set loose instead of telling her he's abusing them? To me, you're as guilty as he is, and I can't tell you how mad I'd be at you, but I do know it'd be a cold day in a hot place before we ever spoke again.

In my defense i have no idea about SPCA???but i have google ....Im not a animal person in general so they cant stay here. I was told if he put them out they will likely be able to survive off of thier animal instincts. I left a message to my mom telling her everything. I cant do anything more . Yes I know my uncle is a sick freak and so does my mom and she shouldnt have placed the cats with him in the first place. I BEGGED her to put them in a shelter and give the cats up. She is technically homeless! She"s not actively looking for another place to stay. She expects my uncle to care for them for 6 months until her old place is fixed up. Why keep the cats at all if you know you cant live with them for 6 months and after all they've been through the best bet would be to take them to a shelter to get put down . I dont see how a crowded shelter is much better than being released in the wild. The shelters keep the animals for a couple days in super cramped cages and than they kill them. If the cats are released they atleast have a chance for survival. Im not taking her cats in. I dont like them and maybe if it was temporary I would but it's not. She plans on waiting the full 6 months for the repairs to be completed. Im not keeping her cats for 6 months.

That is why you take them to a no-kill shelter. They are domesticated cats, they won't survive long in the wild.

OMG this makes me sick to my stomach. You need to call the humane society, SPCA, ANY animal rescue shelter. Get those poor things some help! I know you don't like cats, but this is absolutely sick and you really need to help them at this point.

I offered to keep her cats for a couple WEEKS...I did not want to but i reluctantly did. She declined and chose my uncle because she knew it would be a long term situation. Im not the evil one. I did offer her help and i offered her common sense which is to give the cats away weeks ago!

Im really tired right now so im going to bed but i promise when i wake up at 6:30 am im going to google no kill animal shelters and the humane society in thier area and give her the addresses and information so she can get the cats and place them somewhere.

OK i just googled it..and i found one that is not too far from where she lives. Im going to give her the info in the morning . Will she be able to get her cats back after she leaves them there? The shelter said they adopt the cats back out to other ppl

if you want her to be able to get the cats back, i'd say just board them. there's plenty of places that do this, and it can be for longer periods of time.

i had to board my cats a few years ago when we were going on vacation(they were kittens, too little to leave alone in the house by themselves at the time) and they got their own room with a view and toys and everything.

Thank you for finding a no-kill shelter. Whether or not she gets the cats back depends on the shelter. However, if she explains about the fire, the temporary housing and the fact that she has no one else to keep them, they may be able to find a foster home that can keep them until she's able to take them back. It doesn't hurt to ask.

And FYI - it's always better to take a domesticated animal to a shelter than to dump it outside to fend for itself. Shelters are not evil. They don't just put animals in cramped cages only to kill them in a few days. It's true that many animals end up being euthanized but many, many others are adopted into good homes. And many who are slated to be euthanized are taken from public shelters by private rescuers to give them a second chance. I have a beautiful rabbit who was found as a stray. The people who found him were nice enough to take him to a shelter where he was checked by a vet, neutered and put up for adoption. I was lucky enough to find him there. I have yet another beautiful rabbit who was left at a shelter and put on the list to be euthanized. A private rescue organzation came along and took her to their no-kill shelter. I found her there a few months later and now she's mine. Shelter animals can have happy endings! Animals that are dumped outside rarely do.

I wouldn't count on getting those cats back once they go to a shelter. Somebody should be calling every connection they have trying to find a foster home for them. Given the reason why the cats need a temporary home, I would think somebody would be willing to help. You said you offered to care for them for a few weeks so why not suck it up and make good with your offer? In the meantime, you can help find that foster home for them. Those cats need to get out of that environment NOW.

Yes, cats can live outside, but their lifespan drastically decreases due to vehicles, starvation, disease and predators. Setting them "free" is one of the most irresponsible, idiotic things a person could do to a pet.

espically if they're used to being indoors all the time. they have no way of really knowing how to even BEGIN to get food or what a car is and to stay away from it.

I agree with the others - call the Humane Society, Animal control, the SPCA, a rescue - but don't let them just be set free... at least give them a chance. That is how we got out 12yr old cat when she was 1yr old - someone set her free and moved away. She is one lucky cat - but so many cats just like her are not at all. She would've been dead within a month if she hadn't wandered into our lives.

They will hopefully find good homes for them... sorry about the fire - sometimes awful tragedies happen - just don't make it worse for these cats, they don't deserve it.

Does your Mom have insurance? When we had our house fire the cats and dogs had to be boarded until we were able to move into a rental home, the insurance paid us back for the boarding fees.....PLEASE remove the cats from that temporary residence ASAP, those poor things....

Good grief, the OP came here for advice and some of you are raking her over the coals.

First of all, she has made it clear that she is not an animal person and thus very inexperienced in the matter. She doesn't know what to do and came to you for advice. Please consider educating her kindly instead of bashing her. It isn't necessary and it does nothing to help the situation. Remember, the OP is the good guy here; she is trying to HELP. She is scared of cats. She isn't crazy about them, but still feels bad for them and is desperate for a solution. This makes her a good person!!!! We're all on the same side people! So let's stop with the insults. It's NOT helping the cats you claim to be so worried about!

Second of all, not being an animal person, for all she knows it is perfectly safe to let a cat free. Most people who are inexperienced when it comes to animal care have no idea that it is unsafe to let a cat loose in the wild. They assume that because cats evolved in the wild that domesticated cats can be set free and be ok. If you aren't used to being around animals, how do you know otherwise unless somebody (hopefully a nice person) educates you? Frankly, given her fear and dislike of cats, I find that her attempt to help reflects positively on her character.

Finally, in case some of you haven't noticed, she is changing her game plan thanks to the advice she has received on this thread. She has agreed to call her mother. Perhaps now that she has received good advice she will know that she can probably find foster care for her mother's cats. Not being a cat person, she probably had no idea of this until now. Now she does. She seems to have learned what she needed to learn just fine. She's a normal, intelligent person who understands English; she didn't need insulted and bashed to get the point across.

And please, to those of you who can't grasp her fear of cats, imagine how you'd feel if I asked you to keep my snakes for six months. I'm guessing that many people would rather see them set out into the wild than to keep them in their homes. Fear IS a valid "excuse" for not keeping them, not that she even needs one. As a cat lover, I cannot understand this fear. But an entomologist probably wouldn't understand my fear of ants. Everybody has their quirks and fears, it doesn't make them bad people for crying out loud!

If you guys really care and really want to help these cats, then PLEASE be kind and helpful to the ONLY PERSON who is looking out for their best interest.
