Hertz - you can't make it up

I was in an accident at home. Rented Mon - Fri @ $186 midsize. Insurance picks up $20/day. Needed to extend to the following Friday. Called. Quote for the extension was ONE THOUSAND dollars. I declined. Went online at noon and booked my own reservation online for a Fri - Fri Fullsize for $214.
When I arrived at the stated reservation time of 5:00 p.m., the clerk laughed and said he didn't have any cars. And then he had the nerve to say, "you can't really expect to rent a car the same day you make the reservation!"
I said that yes, yes I did indeed with the magic of computers just as if I bought an airline ticket in the morning for a flight in the afternoon. He laughed at me. Fortunately, he was able to return the car I was driving and re-rent it to me for the same rate that I had but he didn't want to. Seinfeld episode? Seriously. Cannot wait to do the survey.

Car rental agents have been known to make up excuses.

Another example (in my earlier lifetime): I declined the customer optional insurance. Agent said to me, "Our cars go out with insurance."

In this case the sentence the agent recited was true, but also I was not obligated to pay for any insurance options I did not select. I repeated my intent to decline the insurance (insurances?) I did not want and the agent proceeded to complete the paperwork and give me the car.

In your case, if the rental company had a 7 day or even a 10 day rental limit to get a certain rental rate, and combining two consecutive week long reservations produced a result that exceeded that particular rental limit then the agent would be within his right to deny you the second rental.

He claimed he didn't have any cars.

I had an Alamo agent (snip) he told me I just did not understand the "insurance principal".

You do not have to understand the "insurance principal" and you don't have to know it and you do not have to tell the agent what it is like a pupil would answer a teacher. Hence I won't state the "insurance principal" here (I don't know it either). And you do not have to pay for optional coverages you decline.

I was asked if I wanted the insurance, and I said no. She continued very slyly with,"Okay, then you just want the basic coverage?" No, no insurance I said. Then she omitted it.

I fired Hertz when they sent my client (I rented under their Corp account) a scathing letter that I hadn't turned in my car & they were turning me over to the police as having stolen their car. I had dropped the keys in the return box on the day on my contract but took them 10 days to post. It was much faster to send this auto letter than to check my loyalty account & history & inquire with ME (the driver & contract signer) that (had) rented probably 200ish days/yr (I put less than 5,000 miles on my personally car each year) w/o ever not turning in a car without calling for extension. I haven't rented from them since, but do need to use my free earned days...we'll see :crazy2:

I also walked up to a counter (not Hertz) without a ressie, cars were slim pickens & he quoted me an astronomical price. But, he did have a car. I excused myself from the counter, popped open my laptop & made a same day ressie at a reasonable price. Now, the website did warn that sometimes same day ressies don't work if low inventory. But, I knew he had at least one car he offered me & I had nothing to loose. I walked back over to the same gentleman & handed him my conf # & he checked me out at the much lower rate, neither of us said a word about what just transpired.
