Hernia Surgery ?

I stupidly posted this on the Budget Board because I thought I was on the Community Board!

My husband has a hernia on his stomach in the area of his navel. I know the doctor is going to tell him he needs surgery and I was wondering if anyone else has had it. Is it bad how long is the recovery? My husband also has diabetes so I am not really thrilled with this whole thing.

My son had a hernia in the groin area, which he had repaired 3 weeks before he left for his freshman year of college. I don't know if there is any comparison to your husband's since the hernias are in different locations. It was in and out surgery. He took it easy for a couple of days and was fine after that.

I dont know if it's the same for adults, but my 5 yo DS had hernia surgery in May. It was day surgery and you would never know he had anything done. In the car on the way home he was grabbing for the phone to talk to my mother, then proceeded to tell her the whole story...he went to the doctors, got slippers and pajamas, when he woke up he had a freeze pop, etc..... Against my begging and pleading he was jumping around and playing that night. He went back to school 2 days later.

Fast forward to this summer when we noticed some swelling. The fluid hadn't drained properly and he needed to go back for more surgery in the fall. This time he was a bit more out of it, but so was I (I passed out in the recovery room). He got a little sick afterwards, but after a couple days recovery again he was fine. And it looks like things have healed properly now, thank goodness.

My son had one when he was 4 months old but I do not think it is the same for kids as adults. Thanks for the replies now there MUST be some adults who have had this done.

I had it done when I was in college. It was same day surgery. I was sore for a day, getting in and out of bed mostly. Just roll to your side and push yourself up and that works. After a day or two I felt fine but couldn't lift anything over 10 lbs for a month or something like that. It was pretty minor surgery. The more you move around, within limits of course, the faster you heal, tell your DH that when he is being a baby about it .

Had 6 or 7....due for another sometime when I decide it is bad enough.
Day surgery. Day after feels the worst.
No heavy lifting for 6 weeks....other than that....just tender for a few days.
I think I am a pro

Just curious why you've had so many. Same place each time? I'm asking because I had a left inguinal hernia repair done about a year ago. Didn't lift anything for six weeks, took it easy, did everything I was told. It really was feeling better. However, about three months later, pain back in the same place, except this time worse. It brings me to tears whenever I sneeze or cough. I hated my doctor (personality of a . . . well, let's just say he was arrogant you know what!). Can't say I've got the world's flattest stomach, but the left side is now noticeably fuller and sags lower than the right side. He basically just shrugged it off when I questioned him about whether that was swelling or what. "Well, I don't know that it wasn't like that before?" Huh, I think I would have noticed! Anyway, so I've been reluctant to go back, but it's back to the point where I've got to do something. Is this something I'm going to be dealing with forever?

P.S. Will definitely be using another doctor this round!

I was told that they can reoccur anytime. Sneeze, cough, lifting.
Also after so many, I was told to get it fixed again only if it bothers me. I have had one for about 5 years now and it was small and stayed the same, but now it is getting bigger....so I think I have something on my agenda for spring

Oh joy! That wasn't encouraging. Mine stemmed from my c-section, about six months after surgery. I jumped down out of the back of our Jeep, and when I hit the ground, I felt it pull. I've got an appt with my family doctor next month, so guess I'll be getting another referral then.

Sorry......mine first occured about 6 months after my initial surgery...and every 6 months for a few years. I gave up and just let it go then.....
