Hermit Crabs in the Room?

LAUGH if you must..............I have a very dumb question.

We have a hermit crab that recently lost his buddy due to lack of feeding and water from me.

I feel so guilty I don't want to leave him at home and have this one ("Climber") die as well. My DD5 would be crushed, she kept "Breather's" shell and shows it to anyone who will listen to her story about her crab that died.

Anyways, my question...... I am staying at POR do you know if they would consider this a pet? I know I am smiling and laughing as I even ask this question. How dumb just leave the shellfish at home with someone to look after it, right?!

For those of you who can stop laughing long enough to reply, please do share your thoughts.

By the way, I am serious.

I don't think it will be a problem. My son had lots of hermit crabs in hotel rooms and no one ever said anything.

If it eases your mind or your daughters then I say bring him.

After I too, killed off the last set because their water kept evaporating, I bought sponges for the new pair. (Regular yellow spongebob looking kitchen sponges) They stay moist at least a few days in case someone forgets. I don't think they'll ever die from lack of food. A few pellets lasts them a month. Sorry, can't help you with the hotel question.

I wouldn't chance it. They may very well consider it a pet and ask you to move it or dispose of it. I would hate to have something like this ruin your vacation.

Are these the kind that grip onto your hand and don't let go until they want to? The little tiny kind?

You just never know what housekeeping, etc. might say if they see one in your room.

What if something happens to it at WDW? Then you have a child who will associate WDW with whatever happens to the crab.

I would just find someone to take good care of it at home.

We've had hermit crabs in the past and have always left them at a friend's house to be cared for even if we are only gone for a long weekend. Ours both tended to tip their water shell over and would need it replenished frequently. I'm sure you can find a friend to watch out for them while you are gone---it's not like they get in the way, make noise, or are a lot of work

H. Crabs don't adjust to well to sudden changes in temp. If you go from damp northeast to air conditioned plane and then humid florida air and then air condition and back they might not survive the trip.

Why not have someone watch him and bring the shell as a special treat to her poor departed friend. You could always use a story about how the spirit of the departed will take care of the live one while she is gone.

I am starting to feel a little bit better about leaving him behind.

I just need to make sure that his caretakers will keep his sponge constantly wet. Now I have to worry about Red the fish and Tasha and Woody our Tabby cats.

As if packing and planning the trip was headache enough.

Disney here we come!

At the pet store they have long term feeder sticks (they're actually shell shaped) that you can put in the tank for "so many days". I bought a fourteen day "shell" and will just take it out when we're back in 8 days. We have used these for weekend feedings (buying the four day) when we're at hockey tournaments and they work just fine.

I just arranged kennel, we're now trying to figure out what to do with our two guinea pigs!

Hermit Crab advice>> I would leave the live crab at home with someone you can trust. The shell I would let your daughter bring with her as it sounds like she needs to still talk about the dearly departed.

I had two hermit crabs in the room once - my two sisters. They wouldn't leave the room because it was too hot out. They ate room service and I took them for a walk each night when it cooled off. I'll try leaving them with the neighbors next time though.
