It's a New Brunswick story, but maybe it applies to most of the country.

Need a passport? Expect a long wait

Canadians have been lining up to apply for passports before a new rule requiring the documents for air travel to the United States takes effect.

Passport Canada says it is experiencing a high number of passport applications in all of its offices ahead of the Jan. 23 deadline.

In November alone, Passport Canada received more than 355,000 applications, about 91,000 more than the same time last year.

In Fredericton, the passport office has opened two waiting rooms to handle the load.

Mary-Anne Dewitt of Noonan was among 25 people lining up to get her paperwork done.

Dewitt said she should have put more money in her parking meter before joining the crowd.

"I opened the door at the passport office, and the security guard told me there was a waiting line and there was a second waiting room, and I thought, 'Oh boy, I'm going to get another parking ticket,'" she said, laughing.

Ellen Ringette of Saint John spent close to an hour sitting in the office's main waiting area, and said the mood inside was tense.

"It was full when we got here, and it's still almost the same people. People are leaving, and coming back and going for little walks, and stuff, and there's not even enough chairs to sit in, so it's frustrating."

Sylvia McConkey from St. Stephen spent more than an hour and a half waiting to apply. She and her family will be travelling to Costa Rica in March.

McConkey said she expected to wait, but Passport Canada should be doing more to make the line move faster.

"The people working there are doing a good job trying to get as many people through as possible. But all the booths aren't open, and if the federal government knows a lot of people are going to be applying for their passports, I believe they should have probably hired a few more people."

Passport Canada said people who don't have immediate travel plans should wait until the spring to apply.

That's why Im flying out of Buffalo. DS would need a passport too, but by the time we go he would need another because he would have changed too much.

Glad we are driving instead of flying. I'll wait until the spring to apply for them even though we aren't flying in the near future. I at least have until January 2009 for the land ones to be official.

I am also glad that we are driving down instead of flying this year. I even read in our local paper that the government is encouraging people who are driving to the states to avoid getting a passport at the present time given the number of applications that they are trying to process currently.

You know, this wasn't a sudden decision on the part of the Government, and people should have known this was going to happen. We sure did, didn't need ours until the fall and got them in the Spring. You have to figure with all the passports that will be required in a short period of time - duh, it's going to get busy. (and they sure won't waste the money putting extra staff on!)

Thank goodness mine are valid for 3 more years :)

Another thread on getting your passports recommended filling out our passport application online, then printing it off.
I am so glad we did this, it cut our wait time in half from 4 hours :scared: down to 2. . . .:woohoo:
This was at the Edmonton office.
We asked the attendant about this and she said now they have an open file on us which does speed things along.

It actually isnt too bad in Calgary right now. Friends of ours are going to Vegas at the end of the month and they went to the english speaking only office in Calgary and got through pretty quick. I renewed ours and each got the kids theirs in May and boy I am glad I did now!

I was at the downtown Ottawa office this morning and it wasn't too bad - I arrived at 7:15 a.m. (the office opened at 7:30 a.m.) and was out of there by 8:15. They said we should have our passports by January 20 so the turnaround time is not that long. Now if I could just make the clock count down a little faster to our March trip I'd be happy!!:)

This was on the news here tonight.

Deadline looming: Passport required for travel to U.S.

POSTED AT 6:13 PM Wednesday, January 3

Less than three weeks now until Canadian air travellers will need passports to enter the U.S.
And no surprise, many people have left it until the last minute to apply.
There have been long line-ups at passport offices.
There are close to 90,000 more passport applications being filed now than at the same time last year.
People in Calgary have little choice but to stand in a long line.
The reason for the long wait is the looming deadline.
As of January 23rd, Canadians must have a valid passport to enter the U.S. by air.
Applicants drove into Calgary from cities like Lethbridge to stand in line at the Macleod Trail passport office because there are no offices in Lethbridge.
Public Safety minister, Stockwell Day, was in Calgary on Wednesday and says there won't be any temporary ID's issued and reminds Canadians that the January 23rd deadline is only for people flying into the United States.
For an extra 10 dollars, applicants can have their passport application expedited to 10 working days but you must have your flight already booked and include the flight number with your application.

Sandra22: Do youh appen to know what site that you can fill out your pp application online? I have only been able to find the printable ones. Any help would be appreicated. Out present passport will expire two days befroe our return trip. Not sure if it is required to get back to Canada or not, but don't want to take the chance.

Is it worth it to fill out the application online - are there any real advantages to doing it that way?

We need to get passports for our April trip. I'm hoping to get photos and the applications done this week.

I have a couple questions though that you knowleadgable folks may be able to answer.

I was going to fill out the online applications but I can't do that for the kids. Should I still do it for my husband and I and fill out the regular forms for the kids? Will it cut down on my time at the office still?

Also, I have a passport that's probably still valid but expiring within the next year (I have to check). Do I fill out the same form to replace it? Can I replace it early so that all our passports have the same expiry date?

Ta!

dennise,

I sent you and e-mail with the link. If you have trouble with it send me a PM and I'll be in touch.

Here's what we learned.

We also have kids under 16 we needed to get passports for, but because my husband and I had our online application started that was enough to speed things up. It didn't matter that the kids couldn't be done online.

Somehow this didn't work for us but friends of ours who went to the same Edmonton office a week before we did, got to by pass the line because they had an online application and were told if they would pay by credit card it would move them through quicker. Even with the huge line up, they were in and out of there in hour. They just went into the main area where you can find an attendant who walks around and asked him about having the online form filled out and he took them to a different line up.

So we tried the same thing. We, on the other hand were told there was no second line at the Edmonton office, perhaps at other places he mentioned, but we had to take our place in the never ending line up. :confused3 However, after we met with the first wicket where they check over your info. and give you a number we found a seat and weren't seated for more than a minute and our number came up, we did our thing and were out of there. So we passed through alot quicker than the room full of people sitting there when we arrived.

As I mentioned the attendant was telling people to expect at least 4 hours to get through and we were out of there in 2 hours.

:cool1:

Thanks Sandra22 for the online information. I think I'll try it to see if it speeds things up.

I guess I can't take in all the applications? Does my husband have to be physically present to apply or can I just take his with mine and the kids?

cammie1229,

That's a good question about whether or not your husband has to be present.
I'm really not sure about that. . .

We are leaving on our trip January 31st, and we were at the passport office December 15th. They told us we should have our passports not long after January 3rd. We just decided on this trip at the end of November, plus we live 4 hours north of Edmonton, so we had a a few things to work around. We are just keeping our fingers crossed awaiting there arrival.

:)

Hope all goes well for everyone still needing them.
