URGENT
Tourists, residents told to leave Florida Keys because of Hurricane
Ivan
Eds: ADDS detail throughout
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Tourists and residents were told Thursday
to evacuate the Florida Keys because the powerful Hurricane Ivan
could hit the island chain by Sunday.
Monroe County emergency officials said the order was effective
at 9 a.m. Thursday for island tourists. It is the third visitor
evacuation ordered in the Keys in a month, the previous two coming
for Hurricanes Charley and Frances.
Mobile home residents were urged to begin evacuating at 6 p.m.
Thursday, and other residents were told to leave Friday.
At 8 a.m., Ivan's center was about 455 miles southeast of
Kingston, Jamaica, or about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami. It had
top sustained winds of 160 mph.
National Hurricane Center forecasters predict that Ivan could
hit the Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane, with winds of 131
to 155 mph, late Sunday or early Monday.
"I don't think that people will think twice when we tell them
it's a Four heading right at us. I think they will be pretty
responsive," said Monroe County emergency manager Irene Toner.

I don't want to whine, but if anyone wants to trade their house -- prefarably in a land locked state that doesn't get affected by tornadoes or earthquakes -- for a very nice 2400 square foot house with a pool in central Florida, please let me know. :earseek:

MarcyIn Florida, tempting! We live in central Iowa. I have lived here since 1978, and my husband has lived here his entire life. Neither of us have seen a tornado touch down. We did have one north of Des Moines ( a mesa cyclone -- really don't know what the difference was) back in '98 that did a lot of damage but honestly, I have seen just a few funnel clouds. Seriously, I really hope this nasty Ivan turns away from Florida. Enough already mother nature! To think this is only early Sept. and we go to the end of Nov. I am hoping that the season just started to get bad earlier than normal so it will quit earlier than normal. Wishful thinking but we can all hope for that. Kathy

What kinda price?

I'll trade you in a heart beat, Florida is my dream spot, I love your state and hate to see what is happening to it. We were on Captiva Island when Charley came, had to leave and it broke my heart. It was the most beautiful spot I was ever at. By the way you would also get out heavy winter clothes, snow shovels and snow blower, get the drift? Good luck to you and all of Florida.

Marcie in Florida...it has always been my dream to live in Florida and enjoy the sunshine.....hate the snow and ice but after the bout that you folks have gone/will be going through, I am having second thoughts. However, if you trade with the previous poster, my husband has a monster snow blower (which he loves to use by the way!) so if you like snow, ice and freezing temps...come on down. It's pretty bad when you think that a noreaster snow storm is better than a hurricane!! Stay safe in Florida and you will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

I'll Trade!!

You can live in a more land locked state than Nebraska! In a nice moderate house with a large back yard in the middle of town (close to lots)!

Hubby is longing to live in Florida, and is very handy with rebuilding (we've remodeled our entire house ourselves).

I live in Sunny Southern California in a 2800 sq ft home with a pool on 1/2 acre. I would LOVE to live in Florida! There's not much to Southern California except wildfires and occasional earthquakes --

I'll trade!... anything so I don't have a transatlantic flight to get to Disney... however I don't think the UK qualifys as landlocked and after our rainy summer you could just be trading hurricanes for floods!

How about a house in FL for a house in TX? The sun and warmth without the snow but we do have tornados up here in Dallas.

We are anxiously watching the weather, set to go on our first Disney Cruise Sept. 18th. It's special as my husband is done with chemo from cancer and our daughter turns 3 tomorrow. We can't wait!

MarcyIn Florida,
Trading sounds good but I hate heat and humidity and would rather be in a cooler climate in the summer.

After our rather damp summer in NY I'm not sure what I would do.:umbrella:

Off to finish preparing for what (thanks to Ivan) is sure to become a 7 day mystery cruise on the Magic!:boat:

Turn Ivan Turn! Ivan, Ivan go away (and stay away!):wave2:

Marcie in Florida. I will throw in 2 snowblowers.

vikingsfan. Where in Omaha are you?

Here's my offer: 2100 sf brick home in Albuquerque, NM. Nice climate, no tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, not much snow, occasional thunderstorm. Good school district. So why do I want to move to FL?

qofhearts - congratulations for your family from a neighbor. I know how excited you are for your husband and daughter. I'm sending some prayers your way for his complete healing so ya'll can enjoy watching your daughter grow up together.

Have a great time on the Magic. She has the best crew on the seas - at least until December when DD moves to the Wonder!

to qofhearts:

hello there neighbor! where in dallas are you? we are also on the 9/18 cruise. like you, we are nervously watching and waiting for news about ivan.

I might trade you!
I live very close to Sanibel/Captiva. You wouldn't even recognize the islands after Charley. It's so bare, very sad.:(

Marcy

Oh boy! what have you started! You can have my humble abode in pastures green in the UK any day for a trade in Florida!!

But if you decide to stay put, I hope Ivan dosen't cause you too many problems and you and your family stay safe.

Rosemary

The 5am track has it farther from Cozumel and GC, but closer to the west coast of Florida semi into Central Florida
