This is mainly a rant, folks, so you've been warned lol!

We live just outside New Orleans, and are scheduled to fly out on Sat for our yearly WDW vacay. Yet again, we are holding our breath to see if a hurricane is gonna rock our world. Twice now, we've had to evacuate a few days early and leave from my parents house in Tuscaloosa (about 45 min SW of Birmingham). And two other times, it was a very close call as to whether we'd have to evacuate right before. Obviously, the big deal isn't Disney World, but that everyone stays safe. It's just really frustrating this year for several reasons:

First, we're flying for the first time. Our youngest is finally old enough that we don't have to pack half the house, so we're really excited about flying and arriving in a couple of hours rather than 10. But if this storm is bad enough, I'm concerned that our flight will be affected. Just don't even want to go there :(.

Second, I'm just so tired of these storms--evacuating, all the garbage that goes with it. We were displaced for a month after Katrina, and life wasn't the same for a very long time. Thankfully, we safely evacuated and didn't really have a lot of property damage to deal with (we built on high ground). So many had it so much worse. It's just knowing that your entire life is going to be skewed for who knows how long.

We're planning to ride this one out. We have a generator, gasoline, window units, plenty of food/water. I'm confident we can weather a Cat 2, even a Cat 3 (although if it strengthens to a 3, we'll most likely evac). We have a lot of pets and it boggles my mind to think of how we'd manage to evac with them all lol.

Anyway, at this point, we are all so ready to fly out of here to our happy place. But we have to weather a big frickin' storm first :(.

As I'm writing this I'm hearing the gusts from Isaac, probably in the 30-50mph range, plus I was in the worst of Andrew in 1992,like a totally destroyed house, so I know where you're coming from.Just yesterday we spent all day preparing the house and dealing with out of control crowds at Wal Mart to get some supplies. We knew this wouldn't be anything close to an Andrew or Katrina but you still have to do it.Hopefully the storm doesn't strengthen much and landfalls in an unpopulated area so everyone will be safe.

I was thinking you could turn this into a plus. Just tell your boss you need to evacuate...to Disney World...cause it is safe there :lmao:

Then, just cancel the airline tickets for a refund (special due to the storm) and take your time to drive... ok, drive fast to get through to central Florida, then take your time :thumbsup2

Good luck. It should be a Cat 1, so it will be a lot of wind and downed trees. However, the airport should be up and running by Saturday, easy.

You can always go with Plan B: Board Up and Bug out.

Your airline will almost surely allow you to cancel or move your departure up at no charge because you are in the cone, so you can leave earlier and not deal with riding it out. The pets are a bit of an issue, but were you not boarding them somewhere while you were out of town in any case?

I like this idea! I had heard Category 1 as well so I'm hoping it's much more minor than previous years for you. But, if the airline will let you change, I'd try to head out sooner!

Y'all have some great ideas :rotfl:. I'd love to go early! But, as with all tropical storms, the situation changes by the hour, and as of right now, it's looking like this will be much milder than previously thought, thankfully. So it looks like we should be fine for a Sat departure.

Regarding our pets, my in-laws live 5 min away, and they always housesit for us. Of course, if we'd all evacuated, we would have had some SERIOUS pet issues (6 hens, 3 chicks, a duck, four cats, a fish, and a snake--what can I say, my kids love animals and we have a few acres).

I'm feeling much calmer today as the weather reports have come in more favorable. Not that I wouldn't appreciate ANY excuse to leave early :yay:!

In the "you could always have it worse department", one of my co-workers was in the Coast Guard during Hurricane Andrew, working all night, while his wife was at home on base with their one year old twins. They had only been transferred about two months before.

When he arrived home the next day, a few pictures fell off the wall and some dishes were broken, but they were safe. The trailer park down the road was destroyed.

...because you are in the cone
:lmao: :rotfl2: I can hear it now...

Southwest (WN): Hello, Southwest, how may I help you?

OP: I need to change my flight, cause I'm in the cone!

WN: You're what?

OP: In the cone, I'm in the cone. <holds up Weather Channel map on iPad> the cone.

WN: Um kay...

:rotfl: :lmao:

Great stuff! :thumbsup2

Sounds like the voyage of the S.S. Minnow. "I think we're gonna need a bigger boat." ;)

Yeah, well, what can I say ... we 'cane-belters have our own lingo. ;)

FWIW, airlines do tend to allow no-charge flight changes in and out of airports that are at risk for closure due to a storm, and where the risk is is defined by the NOAA "Cone of Uncertainty" diagram (see, you thought just "cone" was funny; I'm betting you are laughing even harder at the official name for it.) Normally airlines will announce the suspension of change fees on the website, just about 48 hours prior to predicted landfall.
