Hi All,

I am currently staying at the Poly with my husband and two preschool age kids. This is the first time any of us have visited WDW. We have been at the Poly since Thursday. Here are my pros and cons, and random observations from our time so far.

Pros:
-Meet and Greets: These have been the highlight of our trip for my kids. The first thing they got to do was meet Mickey. Next day my daughter saw Cinderella and Aurora at Princess Fairytale Hall. This morning it was Donald, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto & Goofy at Chef Mickey's. Kudos to the cast members who are behind the "mask," especially the Princesses.
-Hotel Theme/Activities: They love the splash area at the Poly! Even my daughter who is terrified of getting water in her face had a blast. We spent almost 2 hours there. Gift shops galore! Pineapple Lanai is nice. So was the "Pantry" shop, which has everything you can imagine (diapers, medicines, milk, water, etc.) This hotel really has a lovely atmosphere.
-Pressed Coin Machines: This is so much fun to my little ones, and make really great inexpensive souvenirs if you don't want to spend a ton at the gift shops.
-Disney Springs: I really loved this whole area. The ambiance is great, there are shops for every taste, and tons of dining options. My kids had more fun at Springs than any of the major parks. So did I, quite honestly.
-Beds: Really comfy beds at the Poly. Or maybe I'm just so exhausted at the end of the day that anything soft feels great, lol.
-FastPasses: Saved the trip. Would NEVER venture into the parks without them. I found out pretty quickly that my tolerance for standing in line is zero. I'm mostly happy with my choices, even though some of them went against the online recommendations.
-Location: Also saved our trip. Had we chosen a resort any further away, the commute would have been too much for my little ones. Poly is in an outstanding spot, and I don't at all regret choosing it.
-Early Mornings: No, not the event. We wake up around 5:30ish each morning, and like to take our time getting ready. (It's our vacation, after all.) So we usually make it out the door by 8am. The lines for most Fantasyland and Tomorrowland rides were really reasonable all morning, and stayed that way until around 11am. We were not interested in any of the "major" rides like Space Mnt, Splash Mnt, or 7DMT, so I didn't pay much attention to the lines for those rides. Getting out early is a necessity if you hate lines.
Public Restrooms: Very clean, especially considering the number of people that use them. Kids' height sinks are a nice touch. Paper towels and not just air dryers! Wish they would put mirrors over the sinks, but I can understand why they do not.

Cons:
-Hotel Cleanliness: I'm pretty disappointed with the cleanliness of our hotel room. There were hairs in the shower, sink and toilet from the previous guests. The drains seemed clogged in the sinks and in the tub (we're staying in a studio villa.) The tub will not drain on it's own, so I had to unscrew the drain plug to allow more water through. Sure enough, there is gunk blocking part of the drain. Majorly grossed out. The brushed nickel faucets and towel racks are all dirty and dusty. The light in the "spa" shower is dirty. The tile in both bathrooms has splatter spots on them. The balcony has cobwebs in several areas. The murphy bed that folds up has some coins, hairs and small bits of trash stuck in the gap under the bed. (I found that out after my daughter dropped one of her pressed coins down there.) The kitchenette smelled like syrup, I'm guessing from the previous guests. The elevator in our building is awful. Paneling is pulling off the wall and has holes in it. The floor is dirty. The whole thing looks old. On the bright side, the in-room carpets seemed surprisingly clean for a hotel, and the mattresses and linens all seemed quite clean.
-Restaurant Atmosphere and Cleanliness: We have tried to eat out of our room to save money, but there are a few spots we've tried out. First was Casey's Corner. It was difficult to find a table because there was a thunderstorm moving into the area, but once we did it was dirty. And so were all the tables around us. The floors were covered in food, too. Atmosphere was dreadful with everyone clustered so close together. Several tables of people with no food just sitting inside to get out of the rain, while plenty of actual customers were wandering around looking for a place to eat. Food was good to my hungry family, so no complaints there. The next day we went to Captain Cooks at our hotel. Long wait in line during an off-peak hour, drink areas were dirty, food was not good. This morning we tried Chef Mickey's. They sent us back to the wait area because we were about 10 minutes early for our reservations. The wait room was old, with torn vinyl on the chairs. The windows overlooking the pool area and lake were pretty dirty, and had huge scratches on them, like someone had keyed them. Inside, we were lucky enough to get a booth seat near the buffet line. I was surprised by how small the restaurant seemed, and how outdated the decor felt. Our table was nice and clean, but the tables nearby were absolutely filthy. I don't blame the castmembers, who were cleaning diligently, but the family that was eating there. They had left food and drinks scattered under and around their table. I actually liked most of the food I got, but I stuck to my own tastes. The fruit was pretty sad, with the exception of the strawberries. Everything was kept well stocked. The character interactions were fun for the kids, but I preferred the Meet and Greets in the parks which felt a bit more personal. Minnie and Pluto both came back to our table because my daughter had been in line and missed the first time around. Character meals are a good way to fit lots of meets into a short period, I guess.
-Castmembers: Let me start off by saying this - I did encounter some great castmembers during these last few days. But they seemed to be the exception more than the rule. By and large, the castmembers looked miserable, never said hello, and in a couple of instances were actually rude. I'm a little disappointed given Disney's reputation for "world-class" customer service.

And that's it for now. The heat is pretty awful, but that's just Florida and the time of year, so I can't really call it a con. All in all, we've enjoyed our time here, but I doubt we'll be coming back. I'm glad that we got a chance to experience it once!

Thanks for the review! Sorry to hear about the bad stuff. We've stayed at the poly and love it so make sure you stop by and let them know your concerns. Have a great rest of the trip!

Thanks for the wonderful review! Agree with above poster and stop by the front desk and ask for a manager. We found the Poly staff to to be very helpful. I would voice your cleanliness issues with the Poly staff.

Thanks for the review, sounds like most of your issues were with your resort. If you are still there you should definitely to the front desk and let them know your concerns. The DVC rooms are all time shares so are treated a little different from the resort rooms but there is no excuse to not clean them between visitors. I've never been a fan of the character meals, the food has never been great and they push so many people through them there is just no chance for the CMs to keep up.

When we were at WDW last month, I overheard two cast members talking about their schedules. One said she'd had two weeks in a row with really low hours. Ideally for Disney, they wouldn't be discussing this in a public area, but when you depend on income from a job, and the people in charge cut your income for whatever reason, it's hard to stay happy about your job. To us the guest, that translates to a less magical guest experience. Sorry you are experiencing this, OP, because there was a time when interactions with WDW cast members were second-to-none.

If you can, try Cape May Cafe breakfast for great character interaction.

Thanks for your review. We just got home last night from our latest trip to Disney and the Polynesian. I agree with the previous posters that you should talk to the management at the Polynesian about your concerns.

Our room was clean. But some parts of the buildings are looking run down. We stayed in the Fiji Longhouse and the entryway and the elevator look very old and dirty. Everything else - lobby, restaurants, pools, landscaping - was nice.

I also agree about the cast members. We ran into some really great ones but some not so great. One cast member at Spaceship Earth really did not look happy to be there.

And yes it was super hot! But like you said that's to be expected at this time of year.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Great review and I am so glad that you did have some pluses. I am sorry that you experienced some problems. Disney is not the same company/amusement park that it was ten years ago. They have got real manic about "saving pennies" and I feel the customer service has fallen substantially. It use to be extremely rare to run across a cast member that was not superbly trained and immensely helpful. Now, they get very little training and they have reduced their staffing. It shows everywhere.

Glad you're having fun. We love poly location too. We just got back Wednesday and I didn't run it it any rude cast members but as a whole they seemed more interested in each other when they were in pairs than the guests. I chalked it up to a generational thing. When we encountered cast members working solo they were much more engaged and friendly. I didn't mind any of it either way. I feel like the contrast is more stark for us oldies who remember how Disney cast members used to be.

Sorry that you probably won't be going back,BUT I have found people either really LOVE WDW or can take it or leave it.

I knew from my first night ever at WDW standing at The HUB with the Spectromagic floats coming by while changing colors that I was "hooked",but it doesn't happen that way for a lot of folks.

But I'm glad the pros outweigh the cons so it wasn't a wasted vacation!:)

I think that the character interaction at the meet & greets is superior to character meals. Plus, the M&Gs have cute backgrounds, better lighting for pics, no strangers (or food/utensils) in your pics,...

Idk what the makeup of your family is, but I'd really try to ride the mountains if you haven't done so. Splash, especially, is one of the longer and better done rides at wdw.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! We are headed to WDW in a month with little kids, so it is interesting to hear. I haven't been planning on many character meets, perhaps I'll try to work some more in.

I am sorry that you are not satisfied with the customer service. My family were at Disney last week for 6 days. I have found almost every cast member that I met, except for the check-in CM at H&V, was very friendly and courteous. Maybe it is because I am from NJ so I am easily satisfied. :rotfl:. Customer service doesn't exist in NJ to my honest opinion..

If folks from NYC/NJ want to feel at home with regard to customer service, head over to SeaWorld! The other day, I had a lovely security person who snatched my purse away from me at bag check, an ice cream cart worker who was talking on her personal cell phone while she served me, and the person working at the photo stand after Kraken told me that the vomit all over the ride exit wasn't her problem and she didn't care. It was just like being in the northeast again. :)

(Disclaimer: I have met good folks who were working at SeaWorld and this post is at least 80% in jest, even though all three things mentioned are true.)

Thanks for sharing! I am sorry that you feel like you won't be back! You really do need to let the management of the Poly know about what you experienced. I have a feeling you paid a good penny to stay there, and the conditions you mentioned weren't up to what they should have been.

Maybe when the kiddos get older, you could try Round Two! When they get older, it really does open up the World to them more...

I hope you have a great rest of your trip!

The Poly DVC units were all rehabed/converted over. If you are a member contact member services, copy your above post. The condition is unacceptable as you describe it.

It is imperative to report such conditions and not accept an excuse for being put in such a wreck of a room.

As for adjusting/removing the tub drain, I'm speechless. Would never dream of doing it. Did you call the desk and ask for maintenance before taking a hands' on approach?

Regardless, I would still contact the hotel manager and express your concerns. Better late than never.

There are quite a few responders on the this thread suggesting that the OP contact the Poly management about the room. For this kind of money, shouldn't the management make sure the rooms are well maintained without being prompted by the guests?

This is what I find disappointing. The Poly rooms should be clean and the sink and shower drains should be free flowing. It's not like the room rates were reduced when they reduced the housekeeping staff.

Managers cannot check every room every day. Without guests reporting issues there is no way to correct problems and to retrain or reiterated standards to individual housekeepers who may need a refresher.
