Here lies Chipmunk(s). RIP

Ive been working really hard to bleach and stain our deck.
Stupid squirrels-we have a herd of 'em in the backyard-LICKED the bleach off the wood, then I caught one chewing the fresh stain I had just put on!!
gnaw..gnaw..gnaw...laugh at me and indoor kitty through the window...
This morning-lots of fresh squirrel chew marks on my pretty deck rails.
Furry rats.
I'll just have to try the water bottle trick.
They'll probably open their mouths and drink it.

If you want to see chipmunks, squirrels, racoons, and deer, drop by our house sometime. We have a veritable zoo going on in our backyard. The squirrels lounge around on our deck's railings. Occasionally one of them will come up to the sliding glass door on the deck and knock, just to see if we'll let them in so that they can watch TV with us. Some of them have been gnawing on one of the 4x4 posts that holds up the deck and have nearly chewed halfway through. There was a fist-sized hole in one of our aluminum downspouts (that I repaired last weekend) that was the result of one or more squirrels trying to recover nuts that they had dropped down the gutter. The chipmunks have managed to eat nearly every flowering bulb that we have planted over the past 20 years. I guess that isn't a problem because the deer used to come by and eat all of our tulips. I too trapped and relocated 24 chippies one summer over the course of 3 weeks. And I didn't bother baiting the trap. I just set it near where the bulbs used to be and they would run through the trap and get caught.

I don't mind the squirrels, but could do without Chip and Dale. Or is that Chuck and Dave?

I have a happy chipmunk story...

Once upon a time, there was a chipmunk named, uh, how about, Roy. Roy lived underneath a cement patio. Every afternoon, around 5:30, Roy likes to take a little break from his tough chippie day. He climbs up on the patio and has himself a seat on the patio chair.

But Roy you see, has aspirations to become human. He doesn't simply sit on this chair in the normal chipmunk manner! No, he sits upright on his little hiney with his little chippy hands resting on his little chippie pot belly.

He really is the cutest thing to see!

I wish we had chipmunks! We only get squirrels but I make sure to feed them plenty of nuts to keep that happy. I also have a squirrel proof feeder that really works. My mom gets the chippies at her house and I'm so jealous! They are adorable!

We were infested with chipmunks when we first moved into this house. Couldn't get rid of them. Next year, nothing. I found out one day while I was cutting the lawn why. A lovely snake that thought chippies made a mighty fine meal. He's still with us. He summer's under our shed and winter's under our deck. I haven't seen a chipmunk in 10 years.

We had a real cute one living in our neighbors yard in back of us. Used to run around in their yard and one of our dogs used to hang out in the backyard watching it. One night we were watching tv, my 12yo was sitting eating his ice cream...nice family quality time. I looked down at Sheena, our dog and wondered out loud why her mouth was so dirty (figured the "digger dog" had been digging in the backyard again). Well she stood up and spit the dead chipmunk out of her mouth--she'd fit the whole thing in her mouth. :crazy2: I almost threw up, my 12yo almost upchucked, and thankfully my DH was home to clean up yet another dead animal. :sad2: Not the first time she'd brought one in, but the first time we'd witnessed it. YUCK!

My dog did something very similar. She had killed a squirrel and buried it somewhere in the backyard. About a week later my mom was cleaning up in her room and in came the dog with that squirrel in her mouth. She tried to put it on my moms bed! Mom freaked, dog took off backoutside with the squirrel, then mom called me to help her find it. Finally we found it and disposed of it. It was truly gross.

(BTW: We have dog doors so the zoo of pets can just come and go as they please.) My oldest cat used to hunt birds. She loved to bring them to you as presents. Well, once while I was sleeping, I felt her jump onto my bed (she is a big cat) and plop something at my feet. Yeah, it was a bird. Very gross and traumitizing to a 12 yr old. For about a month after I had to lock my bedroom door at night since she is a smart cat and can open doors. She is old now, thank goodness, and just lies around the house. No more hunting for her.

I'd rather be infested with chipmunks!

This morning when I looked out, there was no mama chipmunk sitting on the rail to watch me as she has EVERY MORNING for a month. There were NO little babies in the yard, playing, as they have been every day. He has slaughtered the whole family.
We have a serial killer in our neighborhood. I am going to change his name from KittyBuddy to KittyBundy.

Oh yea she never killed them just brought them to us must have been into relocation as well.

Now that is funny! I could picture it as I read it!

It really makes me feel bad when I think about it. I don't like animals of any kind to be hurt--esp. little new families, plus I think I heard it when it was happening. There was this commotion under my porch yesterday morning (this is the porch they run around on--I think they lived under it) and I pounded on the back door to try to stop it while I unlocked the door. (The commotion was loud enough my two cats came running downstairs to see what was going on before I started pounding). Then up popped KittyBundy, standing on the porch and meowing and looking innocent. He usually stays around front.

I KNOW it's his nature and the call of the wild and all that, but still... :sad2: That's what I get for getting attached to wild animals.

Rabbits can sure scream loud! :scared:

One time after 10PM one night we were inside watch the news when we heard a scream and ran outside where our dogs were. I yelled at my DH to get a flashlight and managed to run through the yard, avoiding land mines (we're not so great with the scooping :rotfl: ) and found a bunny that had lodged itself in the wire of our split rail fence. After my DH brought the dog inside I went to the other side of the fence and the bunny backed away from me and escaped from the other side of the yard. There aren't any big gaps in the fencing, but enough for rabbits to get in (even though the fencing company said they couldn't).

She has killed some rabbits, and I feel bad, but considering those cute little bunnies mowed down my blueberry bushes last year I don't feel nearly as bad as I otherwise would.

Yes, this is the same dog that brought the chipmunk into the house.

Our other dog would chase animals, but never catch them.

BTW, Sheena is find with our indoor cats, thank goodness. :)

Aww....well I have no blueberry bushes, or anything else that the rabbit disturbed, so I feel especially bad. You can imagine how bad.....you know how I feel about worms, and they are dirty and slimy. Bunnies are fuzzy and cute! :)

I joke about the rabbits, etc but I hate it when the dog gets animals or when the car got the chipmunk. Honestly, I went off and cried about the chipmunk that got hit I'd grown so attached to him. We had another one that hung around on our porch that later disappeared that liked to pick my strawberries (it's ok, he didn't eat many and I had lots of strawberries) and he would then come sit on the porch eating what he'd picked. Too cute. We have a mouse living in our garage and we bought a humane trap because I won't kill him.

Yep, I'm a softy, I just talk big. :teeth:

Oh, and I've been known to rescue worms, too. :rotfl:
