Here is September 11th as it happened on the DIS...very long

My brother in law was supposed to be a flight attendant on one of those flights out of Boston. He called in sick that day as he wanted to go to court to fight a speeding ticket. Of course the ticket was forgotten as he- and so many other airline employees in the Boston area- flocked to Logan Airport, hoping against hope that there was something, anything he could to to help. Unfortunately, that was not to be.

NEVER FORGET.

On September 11, 2001, I was working in Base Operations at Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park, where I also watched the events of 9/11 unfold.

I was sent a carefully worded script to read over the theme park intercom to close the park immediately!

I stood at the exit afterward and handed these passes to every guest leaving the park. I kept this one, and it’s probably still valid.

I started at the DIS in October.

Never Forget

Was home working while babysitting my youngest niece and caring for my mom, who was recovering from cancer surgery. My sister called from work and said to turn on CNN because a 'small plane' had accidentally crashed into the World Trade Center. We had been watching cartoons for my niece and when we changed the channel one of the towers was already burning. We watched, believing it was a horrible accident. When the second plane hit we saw it and I remember my mother said, "it must be a screw up with the flight radar."

I was so scared, and I said, "no this is on purpose-we're under attack." She didn't believe me until the reports started coming in that another plane had hit the Pentagon and that maybe there was another plane heading for the White House. A plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

They dismissed school and I had to run to my sister's house a few blocks away to see if her other two kids were there and I found them huddled together sitting on the front steps.

My sister worked right across from Independence Hall in Philly at that time, and she was let out of work and had to walk miles home because the buses had stopped running.

I remember that night I had to go grocery shopping, which had been my plan for that day. I thought it would be a distraction from the horror. The supermarket was playing CNN's feed over the loudspeakers and the entire place was deathly quiet even though there were lots of people shopping. Everyone was walking around listening to the news. At the checkout there were some small American flags and I bought one to attach to my railing outside of my house. I was the first one on my street to display a flag, but by the next day or two they were everywhere.

I was teaching 5th grade. We were not allowed to turn on TV or keep up with what was going on. My now exdh was in Manhattan for work. I knew he planned to be in or near the World Trade Center during the trip but did not know specifics. Could not get a hold of him for hours. It was awful. Thankfully he had already rented a car for work, so he was able to drive home to Indiana on the 12th.

Both my husband and I lost people we knew.

I was newly pregnant with my second, crossing 1st Avenue in Manhattan to vote in the primary when my husband, who worked downtown in the financial district called to tell me a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Towers. From uptown, I watched the smoke billowing into the bright blue sky. My husband walked 6 miles to our apartment. He made sure not to look back because he didn't want the image of the people jumping in his head.

It was so surreal in NYC, but the pulling together of all the volunteers was heartwarming in a sea of unhappiness.

Thank you so much for putting this thread together.....I thought I had posted on it before but I guess I did not. This day will always be tough for our family. My husband was working as a Port Authority police officer on that day at the GWB. He went down to the WTC in the afternoon and was then there for the next year working. He lost 37 friends and co-workers that day from the PAPD. Not sure if many know but the Port Authority Police had a command post in the basement of the WTC. The building was patrolled by the PAPD. He called me and told me he was being sent down to the WTC in the morning and that was the last I knew. In the meantime, he was switched to do truck checks on the George Washington Bridge (another potential target that day) and was not sent down to the WTC until later that day. I was at work and then they let us all go home but I remember watching the towers fall on the TV in a conference room huddled with other co-workers not believing what we were seeing. I was devastated as I thought at the time that my husband was at the Trade Center as he told me. I could not get through to anybody for hours not knowing what happened to him. I picked our kids up from school and we were all home just waiting for news. Luckily, he was able to finally let us know he was safe.

We will never, ever forget the lives lost and the devastation of that day.

As horrible as Sept 11 was to the victims, their families and communities, it was an experience that must be remembered. We were united for all we had in common. There was no us/they within our borders, just brothers and sisters of a country. For a long time after.
