Now THIS celebrity death hits home.

The 1980 Olympic hockey team winning the gold medal was the single greatest sporting event of my lifetime.

I can probably still identify the entire team by name. I will never forget it. Bill Baker's tying goal the opening night, Eruzione's goal against the Russians, Jack O'Callahan's toothless grin, Jim Craig with the flag draped over his shoulder looking for his father, and all the Boston boys in a big huddle after defeating Finland 4-2 for the gold. Mike Eruzione was my boyhood hero. Herb Brooks made it all happen.

And now their coach is gone: http://espn.go.com/classic/obit/s/2003/0811/1594173.html

I just read about this a few minutes ago. A sad day indeed for hockey fans :(

A very sad day indeed. I too remember watching the miracle on ice. It was so great so see the team years later get to light the torch in Salt Lake City. Another great life ended too soon.

oh man! that's terrible! We loved that team too! Older DS was just a new-born - DH & I were huge hockey fans!

So sad. I remember where I was when I heard we had won--the game hadn't been broadcast yet, but we were at a HS basketball game (I was a junior) and they announced it since we would miss the game--the place went wild and the pep band broke into the national anthem. It was awesome.
