We have befriended a 15 yr old girl in a group home. She spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with us and a few weekend since. We would like to get her a valentine present but I am at a lose at what to get her. Any ideas?:lovestruc

Well, there is always chocolate! A long stemmed rose in a small vase? Including her in your family Valentine's Day dinner? A Starbucks card?

Since kids in group homes typically don't get a lot of stuff, I'd get her a physical thing she can use and keep (in addition to a flower). Maybe a shirt, cute purse, jewelry (like from Claire's), etc.

Does she have an MP3 player? You can get those pretty inexpensively. Ask the group home managers, they no doubt could give you a whole list of things she'd love to have.

I'm guessing time with you probably means more than anything to her! Dinner out, a movie, getting your nails done, etc.

I also like the idea of a purse, with some treats inside (candy, lotion, Claires-type jewelry, small gift card, etc.) if you want to give her a physical present.

What a kind, sweet thought! You are good people to reach out to this girl on Saint Valentine's Day.

How about some nice, in-style clothing or a little necklace for her to wear?

The music or MP3 player idea is great, assuming she has computer access.
If not, a CD would be nice.

If she likes a certain movie, a DVD of it would be appreciated.

You didn't say what type of group home she resides in, but assuming there are no dietary issues, a big container of candy or chocolates to share with the other residents would be really nice. That way, everyone gets a little treat and she can give them out. I would ask the staff first, though.

DD16 loves bath stuff, lotions & hair stuff. She also loves those soft fleece throws that come in really cute prints or a bright solid. Depending on what you want to spend, I bet she would love a shopping trip to pick out something on her own - shirt, etc.

Maybe a Valentine's themed little gift bag with things like cute socks, nail polish, flavored lip balm or lip gloss, a little bit of candy, and maybe a Young Adult chick lit/romance book (Princess Diaries or something along those lines...maybe even Twilight if she doesn't already have it).

Often you can sterling silver at an inexpensive price.
We once got a teen girl who was part of a Christmas program (similar to Angel Tree) a silver chain and a little silver heart pendant at a boutique for not much $ (wish I could remember amount, but probably $15 to $20). It was put in nice box and looked beautiful. It was an extra gift.

Of course, we never knew her reaction but noticed next year several teen girls had silver necklace as a wish on their tree tags. ;)

I like the silver necklace, or bracelets. For a girl in a group home I wouldn't get the Teddy bear, stuffed animal route-they don't usually have a lot of personal room plus the money would be better spent on things she can use-but still fun and valentiney. If you go the red or pink route you could get her a long scarf in either color very big among the girls right now, belt, socks, nail polish, lipstick, leggings, cami's, T shirt, earrings, Lots of stuff!! You can always throw in a bag of Ghirredeli squares in a red bag if you wanted to get something sweet or some other small amount of choc.
