Help with Thomas the tank engine toys???

Can anyone help me with the different ranges?? we have ruled out the original wooden range as they are just too expensive ( over £9.99 for most trains) and we are looking at the diecast take along Thomas and Friends range these seem alot more reasonable, does anyone know if there is a track ( preferably wooden) these fit on ie from Asda or Tescos etc. My Dh is quite handy at times and is making him a playboard to put them on, and we are planning to buy a few trains for his birthday next month and expand the range when we visit the US next year.

Why is it children always want the most expensive things he's not even 2 yet and obsessed with Thomas!!!

When our boys had Thomas diecast there was a red plastic track that fitted together much like the wooden track, seem to recall buying it from Toys R Us.
