My 9 yr old son has to do a project on South Africa ~ culture, goverment, people etc.. I was trying to find a childrens book he could read and perhaps a movie. I don't want something like a R rated movie. We certainly will address apartheid but the purpose of the project is to teach about life in other countries now. He picked South Africa because is was interested in it. I didn't steer his choice one way or the other. He was bouncing back and forth between South Africa, Macedonia and Morocco. Any suggestions???

South Africa is hosting the World Cup in 2010. If your son likes soccer, there's plenty of information about the World Cup and South Africa out there.

There should also be a lot of information (I think there may even be a movie) about Mandela and the success of South African rugby team in the 1990s as a catalyst for bringing the country together.

For basic information, the CIA website offers up-to-date information on countries. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sf.html.

Also, National Geographic Kids has a blog from Johannesburg: http://kidsblogs.nationalgeographic.com/you-are-here/johannesburg/

Have fun!

I remember a movie we watched on Disney Channel when my daughter was younger about a South African girl and it touched on the apartheid issues...
I started writing a post to you about it, and my daughter told me she remembered it and mentioned that she thought Lindsay Lohan was in it, so w googled and found it. Maybe you could get a hold of it on Netflix or something?

"Mahree Bok lives on a farm in South Africa. Her father is a policeman who cannot hide his joy when activist Steve Biko is caught by the South African authorities. Piper Dellums is the daughter of a US congressman from California and who lives in a nice home in Washington DC. When Mahree is chosen to spend a semester at the Dellums' house, she doesn't expect that her host family would be black. Nor do her hosts suspect that she is not a black South African. "

Thank you so much for the great suggestions. He is really excited about this project.
