I've had my Nikon D40 for 3 years. I think maybe it was replaced shortly after I bought it. However, I am still learning how to use it and have no plans to upgrade the body for several years. I am looking at adding a new lense to my collection. I currently have the kit 18-55mm, 55-200mm VR, and the 35mm f1.8 (I think) prime.
On my recent trip to Yellowstone, I was overall quite happy with my pictures. Most of the time I kept the 55-200mm lens on the D40 for wildlife shots. We also kept our Canon p&s handy for quick wide angle shots that didn't permit time for lens swapping. The two things I wish I had on that trip were (1) more zoom and (2) a more "all-in-one" lens that would cover wide to zoom.
I am debating between two lenses and neither satisfies both of my wishes. The Nikon 18-200mm VR would be a good "all-in-one" lens from what I've read. Seems to be a very popular walk around lens, but it doesn't give me any more zoom. The Nikon 55-300mm VR gives more zoom, but not any more on the wide end than what I already have. Review I've read do say that this lens gives sharper images than the 55-200 that I have.
I've also read about the Nikon 28-300mm, which is more costly. From what I understand, I wouldn't really get the equivalent of 28mm with it since my camera is a DX format. The reviews I've read say it really only makes sense if you plan to upgrade to FX format camera.
I live right next to the Great Smoky Mtn. National Park and have opportunities to see wildlife around home. I also plan in the next few years to take trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and the New England area.
What lens do you recommend I get? And what outlet do you use to sell your used lenses? If I chose the more zoom option, I would like to sell the 55-200mm. A few $$ in my pocket would be better than an unused lens sitting in my closet.
Thanks so much for your help!
