Hi! We have a 5 1/2 month old cocker spaniel puppy and she is having problems with red eyes. The vet says it's not cherry eye, but might be an allergy to her dog food (Iams Smart Puppy) which is chicken based. Our local quality privately owned pet supply store has an AMAZING man who owns it and knows a lot about animals and really loves dogs so much. He has suggested California Natural which only has 4 ingredients and is Lamb and Rice based. I know we had a HUGE thread once about different types of healthier dog foods and I can't find it. Does anyone know anything about this food? Thank you so much!!!

Also, I remember that thread having a link to a page where there was a list of VERY dangerous foods to feed your dog and I don't remember what it was.

PS Sorry about adding another dog food thread. I missed the fact that there was another one here already.

we SWEAR by Nutro Lamb & Rice for our basset....she's so much healthier, and I credit the food.
Not familiar with the DIS thread on dogfood choices, but here's a link to a site that has an analysis of a lot of commercial brands: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

With red eyes, I'd worry about an allergy to his bedding. Do you launder his bedding? Could it be the soap?

We actually haven't laundered her bedding yet, however, she does lay on blankets a lot. I'm leaning more toward the food because the pet guy gave her some of the California formula and her eyes have been white as snow tonight, no redness at all until we gave her a puppy biscuit that's made from chicken???

Most likely it isn't the chicken in the dog food that is causing the allergy, it might be corn or wheat. Many dogs, including our dog, are allergic to one or the other (corn for our dog). Our little drug puppy takes benadryl everyday for her allergies. She just had surgery and was on 5 different meds for a while, thus the drug puppy name. She is now down to just her benadryl.

We feed her Nutro Lamb and Rice. I have heard good things about the California Natural food.

I think California Natural is made by the same company that makes Innova. Yes, it is, just checked.

That will take you to where you can locate a place near you that carries their food. My dog and two cats are both on Innova and I'm quite pleased.

Thank you!! Our pet place in our neighborhood sells it so we know we can buy it there. It's good to know where else we can get it, though, in case they're ever closed. We gave her some this morning and I have never seen her eat her food so quickly! She is still rubbing at her eyes, but even if changing the food didn't do the trick we're going to stick with it because it's a much healthier option and the cost difference isn't 'that' much.

we use eagle pac duck base dog food. it also has very little ingredients and different meat proteins to choose from since a lot of dogs are allergic to chicken. it has been a savior for my golden retrievers who itch and itch and lick and lick...but no more! a good place to get the weird dog food online is petfooddirect.com and the shipping isn't bad, as they have a lot of sales every week on all food and often have free shipping. good luck with the food your vet gave you! i'd try this for 30 days & stick with it if you see a difference. REMEMBER NOT to give ANY treats!!! it's defeating the purpose of the food!! what we do is give bananas, apples ( cut up), carrots, and ALL NATURAL potato dog treats. most stores have them b/c the allergies are quite common. and also we give them lots of rawhides for the treats. pet edge is a great place for treats petedge.com good luck

Don't they make treats that are made from lamb or rice?

My golden has some allergy issues. We give him California Natural Lamb and Rice and switch it with Calif. Nat. Rice and Lamb if he starts getting heavy. He gets no chicken, no corn. If he does he starts licking his feet, getting ear infections, hot spots.
If you are looking for a good corn/chicken free treat, we give our dog Wellness Apples, Yogurt and Banana treats. Expensive, but he loves them, and they are good for him. Smell good enough for me to eat in fact!!!

Glad the link helped you and that Riley is liking the new food!
