Hi!

We got my mom an iPad for Christmas. So excited to give it to her. I have been loading things onto it for her.

Question - I did these with the ipad plugged into my laptop and under my account. Will she have the oppurtunity to create her own account with it? How will this affect the apps I have downloaded for her?

Thanks!!:thumbsup2

Unless you are going to have her share your account going forward, she won't be able to use the apps you downloaded against your account.

She would need to set up her own AppleID & account and download against that.

If you do share an account with her, then she would have access to everything that you have previously downloaded and would need your password to purchase anything new. (so I wouldn't recommend this other than for immediately family members - we share an account between DH & I for purchases).

Thanks - thats what I was kinda thinking. At least I'll have her started, then we'll get her her own account when things settle after the holidays. CAn I still share my itunes library with her? I manage all her music for her.

If you wish, you could just create an account for her and give her the details. Then you could redownload any free apps to get her started. There is a trick to creating an account without entering credit card info.

If you create an account first, it asks for payment info. If you create an account by the following, it gives the option of "NONE" as the payment.

Log off your itunes info. Go to the app store and select a free app. It will then ask you to create an account or log in. As I said, creating a new accout will give you the option of "NONE" for payment info. You can then download anything that is free and give the account info to your mother and she can change the password and enter any payment info if she wants at that time.

Just make her a new account. If you wish to make it with no credit card associated with it here is a link about how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534 .

Once you make her account, create a new iTunes library on your computer or on her computer. Log into the library with her new apple ID. Then connect the iPad, and it will warn you that there are items on the iPad not in her library. Authorize the computer, and allow the items to be copied to her library. Legally you can have an infinite number of devices attached to one iTunes account, and one iTunes library can be shared by up to 5 computers. The only time it will be an issue is when there are app updates available for the purchases you made. It will require your Apple ID credentials to update the app. If you bought free ones, then just have her download it with her Apple ID. If they are paid, then you can either perform the updates for her, or give her your ID to do the updates.

The best bet is having her on her own account, unless she lives with you. I have all the family devices on one account, and it makes management easier. The only thing to always keep in mind is that the Apple ID that makes the app purchase (paid or free), is the "owner" of that piece of software no matter what.

Also, once she is up and running with her Apple ID she really never needs to sync again with iOS5. A copy of all her app purchases will be available in the cloud for her to bring back to her device if she ever has to restore, or buys a new device.

If I create her an account -will she get any type of email confirmation? I dont want to ruin the surprise!!!!:goodvibes

I have a similar question that I thought I would ask. OP...hope it's okay that I post on your thread as it deals with the same issues.

I am setting up the iPod Touch's that I bought my kids for Christmas. I already have my own iPod (3rd gen) and an iTunes account. If I set up my kid's accounts under mine....can they still have their own apps? What I mean by this is if DD is playing an app and completes a certain level....and then DS has the same app, but is at a different level...does the app save to their own iPod at the level they were last....or is the app updated as a whole...and not to the individual iPods? Not sure if this even makes sense, but I want them to have their own games....at their own saved levels....and not worry about one or the other "ruining their game by playing it" as they complain about when using my iPod.

Also.....I know there is an update for the iPod 4th gen...but I need the iTunes update first. How will this effect my 3rd gen iPod because I do not want to update my iPod ios....as it will lag if I update the software anymore than I already have.

Is it best to create 3 seperate Apple Id's and 3 iTunes accounts? I have already started to create my DD's account, but I just used my Apple ID....but started to set up a new iTunes account under her user ID on our home computer.

I am so confused!! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yes there will be a confirmation. Maybe set her up a free gmail address, and then use that address as her Apple ID. That way you know the email/Apple ID usernames and password, and she won't get the confirmation at her home email address.

Here is the way you go about having multiple libraries on one computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495 .

You can download the new iTunes, and not have to upgrade your iOS on the 3rd gen iPod. When it asks you to upgrade, just click the do not update selection.

Game info is usually saved on the device not in the library, so that probably isn't a concern for game levels etc. There may be some that do save the level info upon sync, and then it could possibly become problematic.

I would probably have one account for your things, and one for the kids. It seems like it might be better to keep your account separate. Also, if your account is linked to a credit card, and the kids happen to know your info you could have a bunch of purchases made through your account. I would set them up a fresh Apple ID not linked to a credit card, and then have them use gift cards to make their purchases.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the help! I will do individual accounts for the kids so they can't blame one another for "messing up" their games/iPods....sounds like less confusion also. Thanks!
