I know nothing about all of the video game systems out there: Playstation, Playstation 2, XBox, etc. :confused3 It's all Greek to me! Heck, my DH still plays Madden Football on his SEGA GENESIS circa 1994! :rotfl: :happytv: :rotfl:

I need help deciding on a gaming system to purchase for my DH and DDs 9 and almost 7. I would like to get the Dance Dance Revolution for my DDs and I'm guessing that is what they would use it for mostly. DH really likes the sports games like football and hockey.

So which system would be the best choice for these purposes? It doesn't have to be the latest and the greatest (see comment about Sega Genesis :lmao: ), just something that is of this century! :rotfl2:

Thanks.
Mary

My choice, since you include your DH would be the XBOX 360..... HOWEVER I could just as easily say the new Nintendo Wii.

I would probably not get a PS3 ( even if you can afford it ) until all the kinks / bugs get worked out.

Or, alternatively.... Go get a PS2! Lots cheaper than the 2 I mentioned. Downside? They won't be making NEW games for it much longer.... You know, thinking about it, I change my mind... go PS2! Thay already have what you want, at a far cheaper price.

yep. PS2, that's the ticket!

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

DH is so into these game systems. We have had them all, LOL
Right now he has the Playstation 3 and loves it. Me, I can't see the difference, what do I know. Anyway, I thought the XBOX 360 was good and the PS2 because you can also use both as a DVD player. The graphics looked fine to me too and they both have loads of games to choose from. I think the Nintendo Wii is a good option too. We got that for the kids for Xmas, DH is "anti Wii", and just loves anything Sony, so he is bias!LOL I guess I'm not being of much help am I? I guess I would say you would do fine with either a PS@ or Xbox 360. I believe you can get them both for really good prices now that the new systems are out.

I would go with the Nintendo Wii, since it is also for your dd's at that age group. It is the best buy out there now. Cool new system, etc...

Here is my favorite game site. Take a look at the games offered.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/

Does it have DDR, though?

BTW, I am NOT biased. I have a PS2 and a 360, but would LOVE a Wii!

Also, I think the most fun game I have ever played is on a 360... viva pinata!

There is a Mario Dance Party game for the Gamecube. It was super hard to get last Christmas but I saw a bunch in stock this September at Gamestop. It should play on the Wii since the Wii can play all Gamecube games. But I would check before you purchase the Wii.

I would go with either Wii or PS2.

I am editing: I think if I were you I would lean towards the Wii. Your dd's if they like DDR may really like the movement involved with the Wii games and as Papa Deuce stated the Wii games are brand new and will continue to be made for awhile. While the PS2 games will stop at some point. If your DH was more of a gamer than I would probably pick a 360 or PS3(after the bugs are worked out) for him and the Wii for the kids.

If you go to my Wii thread here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1287560 you can get Wii info.

I'm obviously a Wii fan girl, but I have every system known to man except the PS3, because I refuse to pay $600 for a system that has NOTHING I want to play.

I would suggest getting the Wii or the Xbox 360. I don't believe in buying old systems when the new ones come out. Yes you can get a Gamecube for under $100, but you will never get a new game, because they aren't being made.

For your children's ages I highly suggest the Wii over anything else as it has (and will have) more games that are appropriate for them while still appealing to your DH.

Another vote for PS2 or the new Nintendo Wii - We are getting the kids a Wii for Christmas and DH had to test it to make sure it worked :rotfl2: He played that darn thing for almost 2 hours - I practically had to pry the remote out of his hand and help him put it away before the kids got home from school :rotfl2:

I would get either a Playstation 2 or Wii as well. There aren't as many games for kids for the XBox. The Gamecube games are supposed to play on the Wii so you can get all of the those cool games. On the other hand, Playstation 2 is also great with lots of fun games. My DS who is 9 and DH love the Playstation 2. They are getting the Wii for Christmas. I just can't pay that much for a Playstation 3 even if I could find one.

We have all the systems....My kids dad works in the industry.

You can get a wii and a 360 for the price of the ps3.

The wii is fun, but the games are short. The 360 is better for shooters and sports games.

I'd get a 360 for dh and a wii for kids.

Thanks Everybody!

A couple more questions:

Since I haven't pre-ordered the Wii, do I even have a snowball's chance in... of getting my hands on one before Christmas?

Is there a dance game available for the Wii? (that is what would interest my DDs the most)

Since I'm not sure how big of "gamers" my girls are going to be, would it make sense to get one of the cheaper systems like the Game Cube or PS2 and upgrade next year when the newer systems are more readily available (and cheaper)? Dh is so used to playing his "antique Sega" that any of the newer systems would seem like a huge upgrade. :teeth:

Both DDs have asked for that "tv plug in game" Designer's World. Do any of the game systems have a similar fashion/design game available? If I'm buying a game system I would love to get games for the system and avoid buying that separate game if possible.

Thanks for all your help. I'm completely clueless.

As previously mentioned there is not a new DDR game for the Wii, but you can definately get the Gamecube Mario DDR, (which by all accounts is one great DDR game) and it will play fine on the Wii (also it will cost a little less than a new DDR game would cost).
The price of the Wii is small enough, I believe to justify getting it as a new system, plus it lets you play all the Gamecube games (again, much cheaper than most of the newer games), plus you can even down load some of Nintendo's classic games as well.
You should be able to get your hands on the Wii before Christmas. Most stores are promising new shipments all the time. You might even want to put your name on a list or two to guarantee it.
I don't believe that the Wii offers a fashion game at this point, but just hang on, if anyone will they will. They are targeting all family members, not just the hard core gamers.

Why would you spend $100 now on a system that you won't use a year from now when you buy the Wii? As others have said you can play old games on the Wii, plus you can download old Genesis games for your hubby.

If you are SURE that you wouldn't buy a newer system for at least 2 years, don't buy the old ones.

It will get increasingly hard to find old games and your girls will start asking for new games that they can't play on their old system.

A new system is an investment for at least 5 years, an old one will get you about a year until you are very outdated. Which is totally fine for some people.

How much SHOULD I expect to pay for a Wii?

I've found one in-stock on-line at Compu-Direct http://www.compudirect.com/cgi-bin/product_view.cgi?HOT-112&bizrate&Component for $699. It is a bundle that includes games... but that still seems steep to me. Wal-Mart.com has a bundle package listed at $649 (out of stock).

Where would be the best place to purchase a Wii? Is it possible to purchase one that is not part of a bundle? Many of the games included in the bundles I've seen are not necessarily ones I would see us purchasing.

Did I mention I was confused? :confused3

Thanks.
Mary

Just bumping....

to see if anyone knows the going price for a Wii.

Thanks.

Well it is 249.99. Don't buy a bundle unless you really want the games or the Wii.
I have been searching HIGH and LOW for a system for weeks.

Our local Target will have them for Sunday. Call yours and find out how many systems they have for opening. Usually they hand out tickets ask about that too...what time will you hand out tickets.

My DH plans to go up at 5am or earlier to see if he can score one.:thumbsup2

Good Luck!
