Help with flight rules

This is our 1st time with fying since 9/11. Are the regulations different from each airline oris it a federal standard? For eg. Liquids like shaving , shampoo, body wash. Deordorants, razor for shaving. Is it carry on or checked bags? For flying should we all be in sweat pants to avoid taking our belts off? We need to know so there is less hassle at the airports. Thanks

If liquids (anything that can be poured - including toothpaste and gels) you are allowed 1 quart bag per person and items cannot exceed 3.4 oz, IF you are putting them in carry-on luggage. They do need to be removed from your carry-on bag though at the checkpoint and put in a tub for scanning (kept in the quart bag).

If liquids are in checked luggage, there is no limit.

You can wear sweat pants if you require a belt, or just make sure to take the belt off while you are in the TSA line. I would worry more about walking through with a hooded sweatshirt on (by accident), as that is what my family tends to do more.

If you are more comfortable going through TSA in sweat pants, if you have pants in your carry-on bag, you can always change after you get through the checkpoint.

They are federal standards. The security lines are run by TSA, not the airlines.

What is run by each airline is the size and weight of both carryon and checked baggage.

As several PP's have already stated, these regulations are federal standards with security screening assigned to the TSA. That being said, almost all the items you listed (except the razor) are allowable in carry-on if you follow size (<3.4 oz) and storage (1-quart ziplock for inspection) specifications.

However, if you plan on checking any luggage, it is probably best to just put all these items in the checked bag to avoid any issues.

Also, besides taking off your belts, you must also remove all hats, jackets, shoes and empty all pockets prior to the security screener. Just place these items in the plastic bins provided. If you are bringing along a laptop, that must be taken out of the carryon and placed in a bin.

Federal standard, so every airline and every (American) airport will be following the same safety procedures.

All the liquids have to be 3.4 ml or under and must all fit in a quart sized baggie. I like to bring a new one for my return flight because it can get pretty beat up if you pack it full like I do shaving razors are fine to fly with but no razor razors such as a box cutter.

Are you more comfortable in sweats? Its really a personal choice. I don't think that taking a belt off would be that time consuming, but it would be a bit of a pain to put back on. Also remember that you have to take your shoes off so you may want to wear tennis shoes so you're wearing socks and won't have your bare feet touching the floor.

See, I usually figure that almost no one shaves with a so-called "safety" razor (which seems anything BUT safe!) or straight razor. I would bet that the vast majority of Americans are shaving with "shavers". Which are totally and completely fine on planes.

So why not answer with that? Shavers that are easily purchased at stores are allowed in carryons. Straight razors and "razor BLADES" like the things you think of as "razor blades" aren't.


I know that I didn't realize that "safety razor" was the term for the handles where you slot in a proper, terrifying razor blade. Though when I think about where the term came from, it was created before modern shavers, so it probably was safer than the previous invention!

For "SAFETY RAZOR" read "DISPOSABLE RAZOR". Those are absolutely allowed in carry on baggage.

The razors that are not allowed are the ones with replaceable BLADES.

So in other words, if you have a razor by BIC, where the blade is integral to the handle of the razor, it's fine to be in carry on baggage. However, if you have a razor that you need to replace JUST the blade, that type of razor must be checked in.

If you look at the blog link, "safety razor" is not "disposable shaver". They are meaning the ones with razor blades popped into the handle. And those aren't allowed.

I think that's is why so many people think shavers aren't allowed, because we don't realize that "safety razor" is something different than what we are thinking.
