I have uploaded my pictures to Flickr to be able to use for posting here, but when I try to put them into a thread they don't show up. I have tried using both the link in the address bar and the link to photo "link" to try and I still don't get anything.

Am I doing something wrong?!?! :confused3

The same thing happened to me. I got frustrated and signed up at Photo Bucket and had no problems after that.

Try tinypic if you don't like photobucket. I've used both.

Photobucket mangles the photos too much, Flickr doesn't.

Flickr can mangle them as well, it's just not usually to the extent photobucket does. Even with Flickr pro. It only keeps your resolution, it still "optimizes" colors and if you're really particular that can be an issue. Most aren't that particular though. Pretty much every photo hosting site, even Zenfolio and Smugmug, alter the image at least a little.

Flickr does not make any changes to the Original photo you uploaded besides giving it a unique file name. If you go to "All Sizes" and click Original, that is the exact same file you uploaded.

Even the resized versions, the only changes made are the images are resized, and sharpening is added (which some users don't like). Nothing is done with colour.

If there are colour problems, on Flickr with one of you photos it's your browser. Most don't understand colour space (Safari on the Mac is the only one that I know of that does support multiple colour spaces correctly). To solve this, you just need to use sRGB as a colour space on your camera, and in your photo editing software.

Flickr does. Read the fine print. They are very specific in stating that the original resolution will be kept but do not promise anything else. There was an article, I think it was in Pop Photo, last year or so that addressed optimization and photo hosting sites. They uploaded then downloaded the images and noted the changes. Many were slight changes that most people wouldn't notice, however all the sites do change the file at least a little bit.

Color space does affect things and accounts for many color errors, but shooting in sRGB is not the answer. Understanding color space and how each one plots colors is.

I use Safari, BTW. 27" iMac with retina display. ;)

Actually not true, just read the Flickr FAQ, and did a little Google searching.

first Flickr's FAQ:

Your original files are available for you to download at any time.
They wouldn't say it was your original file if they changed it, recompressed it etc.

Secondly

I tested it out by uploading a full-size, 100% quality JPEG to Flickr then re-downloading the Original size image and comparing it with the original (using a comparison tool called Beyond Compare). The two files are identical, byte for byte. That means not only has the image not been compressed but all the original metadata (Exif etc.) is also intact.

http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/12423/does-flickr-recompress-jpegs-after-upload

And I just replicated these results, the Original has the same size as the "Original" downloaded from Flickr, and all the data is the file is an identical match.

So Flickr does change your photo when it's automatically resized for the interface, etc, but when you choose "All Sizes -> Original" that is the original file you uploaded to Flickr (unless you uploaded a TIFF)

Again, if you are preparing a photo to be viewed on the web, then sRGB is the only way you can guarantee all browsers will display the colours properly. It has nothing to do with understanding how it works, and has entirely to do with the fact, IE & Firefox don't do well with supporting different colour spaces.

Hmm... it's changed since the article I read. When I read the article I went and looked at Flickr's terms of service for Flickr Pro at that time and it was very specific that you would be able to download the original resolution but promised nothing beyond that. Perhaps the fact that this issue has been brought out into the open helped prompt some change. Then again, they've also been purchased since then as well.

Just goes to show that even when you think you know what's what, you probably don't. Because what was once accurate can become outdated pretty easily online. LOL

Edited to add... looking at the TOS under Yahoo I really don't like some of them. They've got a lot of leeway to alter files in any way in the name of saving storage space.

Edited one more time to add.... jeez... I hadn't been there since the changeover either. They totally did away with Flicker Pro?

Don't get me wrong, I'd never rely on Flickr, as a backup for my photos, I simply used it to show off my best photos, in forums, in Flickr communities and groups, and for critiques. I do miss the statistics you used to be able to get with the Pro account.

Yeah, Flickr Pro is gone, but you can pay $50 to remove ads. The only reason I really paid for Flickr pro was to get the storage, now even the free account has 1TB, which for my uses might as well be unlimited.
