My DD is 13 and on the curvier side. Our budget is very limited this year, but she needs tops. She hates department stores, but Old Navy is also out because the cut of the tops are way too small for her. Any suggestions? We live in the Northeast.

My DD has luck with American Eagle jeans. For shirts she avoids the places that run small like Abercombie and Hollister. Has she tried on-line shopping at Old Navy? They have bigger sizes on-line that they don't carry in the stores. My DD loves to shop, so its hard to say where she buys all of her tops, but I do know she tries to get things that have some stretch in the fabric.

Do you have a Maurices near you? (they are a subsidiary of the Dress Barn) They trend towards the teenager to 20 crowd. My daughter always gets nice compliments when she wears their clothes.

My DD is busty and it's hard for her to find a top that is large enough to go over the bust yet tight enough at the bottom, AE she can wear and we go there the most. She also likes Forever 21 and Wetseal, may be a little older looking for a 13 yr old though. Old Navy she has never liked and Aeropostale seems to be for tweens now.

Lane Bryant is a pretty decent plus-sized store, but they're a bit on the pricier side (unless they're running a sale, which they seem to do one or two times per season. Otherwise, they're up to $50 per blouse). I'm also a teenager on the curvier size, and most of their clothing seems to fit me pretty well and make me not look like my grandmother.

If your daughter wants some items that other teenagers will be wearing (and you're close to either a mall or a large city), Deb offers juniors and juniors plus clothing and is reasonably priced (I am averaging out about $7-20 per shirt). I personally like that they run the exact same stuff in plus sized as they do regular size, so it is a lot easier to find shirts that fit.

I have also had some luck with Walmart's clothing, and they offer an online women's plus section.

DD14 is also on the curvier side. She's not trendy (thank goodness :thumbsup2) so I can get away with Lands End tops. They're basic, but they cover in all the right places and hug the waist. Lands End also gives a generous cut, so she wears a size small in ladies tops. Online has a better selection. I also have some luck in Talbots when they have a sale (which is going on now). Again, I get basic tops for her in there as some of their stuff is a bit too frumpy for a 14 year old.

Good luck. I find it hard to dress my daughters (14 and 17) and make them look like young ladies as opposed to <insert your own descriptive here>. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. It's so hard to shop for girls these days and then add on my DD's modesty and self consciousness about her figure, it's darn near impossible. Deb and Ae look like good possibilities and so does Lands End if I can keep the price down. I may go check them out before I bring her.

Do you have Torrid? Its the Lane Bryant of the teen set - edgier clothes - I'm not sure what size they start at, but I'm pretty sure they don't carry 0.

WalMart and Target have some cute tops in a range of sizes that won't break the bank. Try there.

I took DD15 to Old Navy last week because she had a gift certificate to use up. She was pretty unhappy with how the fits varied widely even with the same item in the same size! In talking to the clerk there while I was waiting, she said it's a big problem there. She wound up with a few tops that look nice on her, but overall wasn't happy with the experience at all since she had to try on multiple tops in the same style and size to get the fit she wanted. I used to shop there a lot when my kids were younger, but it seems to have gone downhill. I was looking for a non-zip sweatshirt that said Old Navy (as a gift) that they used to carry, and they didn't have one in the store.

Torrid looks good too, as long as I take her where no one would recognize her. Don"t you just love these years.......

Aeropostale and best of all .....TJ MAXX and Marshalls. Even JC Penney sometimes.

Around here, Torrid is very popular and there is no shame in being a Torrid shopper. And there is always the internet.

I am very busty up top and as an adult have trouble finding shirts that fit right. Target had solid colored T-shirts that were stretchy.. I believe they were called "the perfect t" and they are perfect! :) Stretchy enough to cover the bust but not too big in the waist or arms! I bought one in every color!! :)

I've had decent luck with tops at Penney's! I have good luck on their sale racks too! TJ Maxx is great! I've found some very cute tops there!

Is there a Forever 21 near you. My 14 year old has the same issues, curvy, larger chested AND she has shoulders that put most guys' to shame, as well as wearing a size 12 shoe. She is also 5'10 so we also have issue with jeans and shorts being too short. She really likes Forever 21 because they have a plus size department that has clothes that are similar in style to the smaller sizes. She also likes Target, JC Penny, TJ Maxx and Ross. Shopping is an all day, headache inducing event here, so I feel your pain OP.

I had forgotten about Forever 21. We don't have one around here, but when she ventures out to shop, she finds lots of things there. She has never had any luck at aeropostle, everything always seemed to be cut too small.

My DD wears a size 12 shoe too. Its maddening. The golf and basketball team all got matching shoes except for her because the sizes stopped at 11 and they were just too small for her to wear for sports. I just hope her feet have stopped growing, but her brothers have huge feet one is a 14 and the other is a 15, so who knows.

I second forever 21. They do have a website too. Prices are pretty fair and huge selection. I like that I found many tops for DD14 without a plunging neckline!

Don't forget Kohl's. Even if you don't have one close to you - you can shop online. They have a Jr. Plus section. They are always having some sort of sale and carry popular brands. Make sure you google for a discount code if shopping online. My favorite is Ross - if you have one closeby they have plus sizes (up to 15) in the Jr. section as well.
